Moving to the Country in Southeast Oklahoma? The Common Black Rat Snake

By
Industry Observer

Black Rat Snake

The Common Black Rat Snake lives in many states including Oklahoma.  It can be a very beneficial resident because it eats mice and rats.  The position that you see this one taking is typical for the animal.  It often curls up and becomes motionless when threatened BUT sometimes strikes if someone provokes it.

I don't like snakes so my mind has to take control over the emotions when I run across one of these guys. The black rat snake is a non-poisonous snake.  I only paused to take this one's picture and then quietly walked away and left him alone.

The young ones of the common black snake do resemble copper head snakes and sometimes are mistakenly killed because of that.  If you do not live in an area where the black rat snake lives and are moving to Oklahoma, you will want to learn a little about them.  Doing a Google search for black rat snake will give you lots of information and pictures.

Judi, We have a lot of black rat snakes in our area too. I typically catch them and relocate them elsewhere as we have a lot of small toads and fish that I do not want them to get into...
