Widget Wednesday~ Tips to enhance your Outside Blog ¡Part Deux!

By
Real Estate Agent with Myrtle Beach Homes Blog

Another Wednesday has come upon us which means it is time for the weekly installment of Widget Wednesday.  If you missed last week, we covered the Local Posts Widget.  We talked about how it categorized your posts and also helped to Search Widgetbuild your SEO.  This week we are going to discuss the Search Widget.

What is the Search Widget? The search widget is probably one of the more powerful widgets available for an outside blog and also one of the most easiest to grasp.  As many of you may recall, I wrote a few weeks back, how the ActiveRain Search Button could save you thousands.  Well, the search widget may not save you thousands, but it can easily help you make thousands!

So how does it work?  The search widget is a Google Powered search engine that allows viewers of your blog to search for the keyword terms they are interested in.  It will display the results to them as if they were doing a regular google search.  The big difference is that it will only show results from your domain!  How cool is that!?!  So, for example, if someone stumbles upon my blog, http://myrtlebeachhomesblog.com and they are interested in purchasing a home in a community called, The Farm at Carolina Forest, the search brings up only posts that have been published by my blog.

If you remember me mentioning how the Local Posts Widget adds layers to your Outside Blog by categorizing and giving each post a unique domain to help increase SEO.  Well as you add that widget and some others you can easily create some great searches for people.  My search above brought back 241 results!

Search Results

So what are you waiting for?  Go add this Widget today! if you have not set up your Outside Blog yet, go do it now!  If you are not sure how to set up an ActiveBlog, as usual, Brad has written a tutorial here.

"The big difference is that it will only show results from your domain!" Not entirely true. For example, if you search for "Myrtle Beach condos" on your blog, the results contain Sponsored Links at the top of the page and in the right column. This widget could potentially send traffic away from your blog ... and directly to your competitor.

John- ok, not sure why yours only brings up 219.  Mine today brought up 238.  I believe it is due to Google constantly indexing and re-indexing.  Here is my latest search results.  As for your second comment about sponsored posts & also filtering the results.  I don't believe there is a way at this time to get into the coding and change it to be more unique.  Unfortunately the sponsored posts will come up, but they are also there when a consumer does a search on google.  Hopefully though, most understand that they are sponsored and don't click off to them.  If they don't the difference on the search they see in comparison to normal google is that all the material is straight from your blog.  Not you, competing with 240 other agents that wrote something or have some sort of info on the same subject.  Also, for your consumers that you want to give an address to begin their searches on communities, you can give that address in confidence that they will be searching your material.

Wow, very cool.

If ever any tool added to the "stickiness" of a site, it sounds like this one would be it.

Jeremy - Is this widget available for us as well to use on our sites that we have aside from ActiveRain? I have already activated it on my outside blog but I'd love to put something like this on greatnevadahomes.com. Thanks.

I had put it on my first outside blog but missed it on the second. After reading this yesterday I looked.

I used to have a Google search on my ActiveRain blog but it stopped working right at some point so I removed it.  Cheryl Johnson shared directions long ago.

Jeremy - Where is it exactly that you are putting all these widgets.  Is this where you would put the code in your settings in order to see the widgets in the right margin of your blog?

I have this widget on my outside blog.  I'm wondering if it's possible to set it up on a wordpress page?  I'd love to have something more google-ish than generic for a search on my wordpress.  Let me know!  Thanks -- Angie
