Every now and again, we all run into demanding, self-centered people. If we have a few strategies, ready we can reduce stress and handle the situation much better.
Author and consultant David Posen, M.D., suggests the Seven "A"s in his writing in "Corporate & Incentive Travel".
1. Avoidance. Steer clear of them if you don't need the contact.
2. Appraisal. Try to understand the their backgrounds and circumstances.
3. Assertiveness. Address the issue but not in an aggressive way. Try to come up with a benefit within the issue for the tyrants.
4. Acceptance. OK. You can't change the way they are, but realize that you can live with it.
5. Appeasement. If you are in a place where you can't argue, it's probably best to give in for now. End the contact.
6. Asbestos suit. If they become very abusive, step back and visualize a Plexiglas shield between you.
7. Accommodation. Try fence-mending and bridge-building.
Try the Seven "A"s, next time and good luck!

That is very helpful. My usual technique on an angered person is to say "let's reschedule a time where we can talk in a calm professional manner......Is tomorrow OK?" Then I shut up, and their anger comes to a screeching halt (pun intended)....most of the time. Great post.
