Normally I smile a lot and I laugh a lot, in the last 10 years the message on my
answering machine has always ended with some version of a smile, for example,
one message said, What a great smile you have. While another said, I can see you smile.
People would call just to hear my message and others would say when they met me in
person, you do have a great smile.
Last week I went to my local Walmart and I must admit I was in a bit of a huff, because
ten minutes earlier someone had broken the mirror on the driver's side of my car and
took off. I was hopping mad, but I had things to do so I continued running my errands.
I got to the counter and the woman cashier smiled and said how are you today. I do not
believe I really heard her as I was thinking of how I would get that mirror fixed. I was
however, brought back to the moment when the woman asked ‘is something wrong,
you are usually smiling and happy, but today, there is no smile in your eyes?'
That was a dose of reality for me, it dawned on me that although I could not remember
being served by this particular woman, people do observe your behavior. I thanked her
for noticing and briefly explained that I had experienced an unfortunate incident, which
had nothing to do with the store. Immediately her eyes lit up and I realized that I was
also smiling - this time with my eyes.
Try it, smiling with your eyes that is, it does make a difference and it attests that you are
indeed in the moment.
