Sales people versus the rest of the world!

You know you can spot a sales person - Type A personality, a ready smile, not easily ruffled (in public, maybe a soundless AAaaarrrgghhh in the car afterwords) and confident.

You know we've been told over and over again to smile thru our eyes, make eye contact, give a strong handshake and be a listener.

We network, we're ready to hand out our business cards and follow up with an email, send birthday cards and maybe send something of value every now and then.

And we are optimistic!

But we are still perceived as a bit slimy

What about the rest of the world?

Non-sales people (NSP) are easy to spot too. I know NSPs who go to a networking event because they've been told to but have forgotten their business cards. They're really not interested in talking to you - in fact, if 2 of them have come together, they'll hang out with each other!

But they are not without a desire to be known in the community, so they will get onto non-profit boards. But they cannot make cold calls to potential donors or talk to past donors because they are just not comfortable doing that.

There are NSPs who will not give you their cell phone number because that is private!

And NSPs who will shoot down every new idea because 'this is the way things have always been done!'

And NSPs who are always pessimistic.

Yet, every NSP thinks he is a cut above the sales person!
