The real reason is that we, as individuals, have not spoken strong enough to our local, state or national government about how we think that money should be spent.  Sometimes it takes a "bankruptcy" to gain the attention of people spending beyond their means.  We are a compassionate country, but we do have to have fiscal responsibility.  I think you will see that individuals will finally stand up for a government that has been out of control for decades.

Karina,

You asked the question "are we that stupid". I think if you checked the average American IQ your question may be answered. Did you ever see that youtube video of the Obama suporters who were questioned about the news during the presidential campaign....Whew!!! Pretty funny but---God help us.

If more people thought like you we would not be "bankrupt". This current administration has "Gone Wild" spending 4 time the amount of money than all previous presidents combined. Although I was a Bush supporter I can find plenty of issues to which I was diametrically opposed. Maybe if he hadn't started the drunken spending spree with the first TARP funds this current administration wouldn't feel empowered to continue it....Probaly wouldn't have made any difference though...
