Things to Do This Weekend In and Around Northern Virginia: 5/15-5/17/09

Every Spring there seems to be one weekend that is filled with great things to do in and around Northern Virginia. Personally, any one of these things would be something I would look forward to, but since they all fall on the same weekend we have the opportunity to enjoy them all! This list contains something for everyone (and they are all very, very affordable):

Northern Virginia Fine Arts Festival: Sponsored by the Greater Reston Arts Center (or GRACE as it is known), this festival is one of the best fine arts festivals around. With artists from all over the country displaying their arts in 18 different categories, there is something here for everyone. Located at the Reston Towncenter, the festival runs  Saturday and Sunday from 10-6. Admission is by donation. Live entertainment and a Children's Art Tent are also featured. Personal hint: each year one of the artists does a festival poster... they are always very unique and worth picking up for that extra room that could use some art.

Joint Service Open House Air Show at Andrews' Air Force Base: As anyone who lives in the DC area knows, Andrews' Air Force Base is home to the President's plane, Air Force One.  Each spring, the base puts on an an amazing Air Show with free admission. There is limited parking, so the public is asked to park at FedEx Field and use the shuttle service to the base. The show kicks off today (Friday, 5/15/09) but will be open only to Defense Department employees and their families. The public is invited tomorrow when the show begins at 9:45 am with opening ceremonies starting at 10:00 am. The show continues Saturday and Sunday until 4:30 pm.

NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament Quarterfinal Games in Annapolis, MD: Lacrosse has finally caught on in the Northern Virginia area (although it has always been very popular in Maryland) and this weekend is a unique opportunity to see 2 of the 4 the Quarterfinal games on Sunday in the NCAAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament, which will be held at the Naval Academy in Annapolis Maryland. This year the final game will be held in Foxborough, Mass, so if you are a local Lacrosse fan, this is a great chance to see exceptional college lacrosse close to home.  Tickets are available through the Naval Academy at the Naval Academy Sports website or by calling 1-800-US4-NAVY.  Sunday's games are Virginia vs. Johns Hopkins at 12 noon and Duke vs. North Carolina at 2:00 pm

I hope there is something here that sparks your interest--and let's hope the weather cooperates!
