Anyone commuting along Route 1 in eastern Prince William County has watched as a new odd metal frame has been erected across from the Woodbridge VRE station. As part of the planned revitalization of this section of the Route 1 corridor a new "kiss and ride" turn off is being created.
For anyone not familiar with the term "kiss and ride" it designates a quick drop off point for anyone taking public transportation in Northern Virginia. It isn't quite as strange a commuting term as "slugging" but it is another part of established transportation network that often surprises someone relocating to our area.
The new structure will allow a pedestrian overpass and elevator access across the tracks to the station directly from Route 1. Currently anyone traveling on Route 1 who wants to drop a passenger off at the VRE station must exit Route 1 and make a loop into the VRE station and then back through two stoplights to Route 1. Not only does it cause a delay but it backs up traffic coming out of the Belmont Bay community.
The project is being completed in two phases but the evidence of phase one is obvious. Since the VRE is a vital part of our commuting network, watching the new station access being developed means that we are moving one step closer to seeing more of the long awaited Route 1 Revitalization project start to move forward.
