Here's another example of producing broadcast-type work with a home video camera. This is a cable spot for J. Alane's Fine Lingerie in North Hills. Shot entirely on my Canon 800 mini DV camera and edited on my laptop. We even composed the music in Garage Band.

In today's web world especially, the equipment is becoming less important, and the vision more important. I purchased a Canon HV30 HD camera for real estate videos (this is the one Canon sells as a companion to their semi-pro cameras). I have pretty much retired my much larger, more expensive pro camera in favor of this great little cam.
One point though, this doesn't apply to audio, that still needs to be recorded with good equipment.
Hey Ray - If we're talking mic jack in, I completely agree. The quality of the audio on miniDV is great - 48k.
Last time I did a traditional commercial shoot, the sound recordist charged $545 for the day plus $200 for equipment (mics and such). The digital backup was another $345 a day :o

There are some great and inexpensive wireless mics like the Samson U-series and others.
