Home Safety Tips: Preventing Dog Bites

By

I'm sure that when we think of safety tips to keep our homes, families and friends safe we don't usually think of our best friend Fido. After all, dog is mans best friend right? How can he present a safety hazard? The answer is simple: dogs bite! Even the kindest, sweetest most lovable puppy might bite by accident or by provocation.

But we as responsible dog owners can help to prevent this from happening by observing some simple steps:

JTHIS-Professional Home Inspection Team

  • Make sure you raised your dog to be social with both people and other pets.
  • Don't put your dog in stressful or threatening situations, especially as he gets on in
    years.
  • Make sure you train your dog to obey basic commands such as sit, stay, come, and no.
  • Never leave a baby or small child alone with a dog.
  • Teach young children to be careful around pets, including their own.
  • Keep your dogs vaccinations up to date.
  • Be alert and aware of how your dog is reacting to people and situations around him.

If your dog bites someone be responsible. It's not about whether it was your fault or not. It's about making sure the person and your dog are properly cared for. Your reaction can greatly affect the out come of the situation.

  • Immediately restrain and confine your dog.
  • Make sure the person is all right.
  • Wash the wound with soap and water, add a bacterial cream and clean bandage.
  • Seek medical assistance if needed.
  • Make sure you have your dogs medical and vaccination records and license information available.

The most important thing to remember is that sometimes despite the best intentions or planning things go wrong and accidents happen.

In addition I would like to add to very good point that was just bought to my attention from my AR friend John Mulkey, Housing Guru. For anyone who hasn't read his blog yet I've added the link so you can check it out.

If you are a dog owner who is trying to sell your home, please don't leave the dog in the house during showings. Doing so creates serious liability problems and is a turn-off for some buyers.

My friend Barbara Duncan has also bought up a couple of good points that I will now add to this post. If you don't know Barbara, I have included her link here so you can check out her bold. Here is Barabra's suggestion:
Don't leave their water dishes and food dishes out in plain view and it would sure help to repair any doggie damage before listing too.

Hi Suesan - We have a 3 yr old and he loves dogs and we have always made him ask for permission before walking up on anyones dog. He is pretty good about asking on his own but he still doesn't understand why he can't pet dogs that are in the back of pick-ups that he sees in parking lots when their owners are in the store. Thats a very common sight here in Wyoming.

Dan, I know what you mean. We raised our children around dogs, cats, horses etc. and there was never a problem. Like you we always made sure to watch out for our children as well as other peoples children. I always introduce my dog to friends and their children and never leave him ignored. Simple common sense.

Dan, nothing like a computer with a mind of it's on. Thanks for your comment, I was trying to cover all the bases. I'm sure there's more we can do, but these seemed like some simple basics.

Suesan, many dog owners just aren't aware that an improperly trained dog--and some trained ones--will bite when conditions are right. You present some great tips; and I would add, for dog owners who are trying to sell their homes, don't leave the dog in the house during showings. Doing so creates serious liability problems and is a turn-off for some buyers.

John, I want to thank you for both your comment and your suggestion. Not being a Realtor I didn't think about that one, but now that you have bought it to my attention I have included it as well.

Great advice to NOT leave the animal in the house.  I'd also say don't leave their water dishes and food dishes out in plain view.  It would sure help to repair any doggie damage before listing too.

Andrea, I don't think dog owners realize that our pets are our pets, and not necessarily everyone else's cup of tea. Makes showing more complicated and increases liability. My bid fear would be the person being bite and my dog being taken from me. A little common sense goes such a long way. What about a buyer with allergies that forgets to mention it to you? That would not be too good.

I think it's great that you go so far out of your way for your clients, but removing the dog would be so much easier on you, your client and probably the doggie as well. Hey, thanks for your great comment.

I have a Great Dane, a lab and three cats.  I think I better just move before I list my house. :)

Tammy I hear what you're saying. We have 2 dogs, 1 cat, 1 bird, 1 rabbit, 1 salt water fish tank and 2 teenagers. I think the teenagers might pose a showing problem as well as a safety issue. :)

I would add that if you're a seller, make sure your listing agent knows that you have a dog so the information can put it in the MLS. It's not always possible to remove a dog for a showing, but you really don't want a Realtor and prospective buyer to show up to see your home and not be able to because of a barking dog.

Hi Suesan - I am working with a client now and trying to stress that she needs to remove the dog or crate it during showings.  I think this post may be just what is needed to make the point.
