Newspaper vs. Internet

Services for Real Estate Pros with Metrolist

Prediction: 90% of your sales will come from word of mouth or digital promotion by 2011. How do you change what you're doing today to be ready for that?" (An excerpt from Seth Godin's blog.)

Newspapers vs. Internet

Where are you spending your advertising resources? We've seen the demise of our own "Rocky Mountain News" and the value of other newspapers decline in terms of attracting buyers.

This chart clearly shows the power of the web.  Be sure to include compelling information like this in your listing presentations when you're discussing how you will best market your next seller's home using technology.

Melissa... I have been bombarded with "webmasters" and Internet marketing "Gurus" for the past few years, they reach me , and it appears they reach everyone. I hope the price for their service comes down, as so many offer these services and none has to be local to work your account. When global marketing can be done anywhere will these "Gurus" be sitting on a beach soliciting our business?

I'm sad to say that we just canceled out daily subscription to the newspaper--only to receive it on Saturdays and Sundays. I know that we are one step behind many who did that long ago. This is just an example that supports the data in your blog post. We can get most everything that we need from the Internet, except the newsprint marks on our fingers!

Melissa, you are right, other than the luxury and farm and ranch category, print advertising for real estate just keeps declining year over year. Very good emphasis on your topic. Me? I still get the newpaper seven days a week to read what is NOT online. I have multiple inputs, but I am defnitely not the norm.

You're right! Print advertising is becoming a thing of the past. We only advertise in a few publications the rest are online.

Our (large) office made the decision to continue advertising in the newspaper just to appease the sellers.  They like seeing their home listed, and we advertise to them that we list it every Sunday until sold.  It's an indirect cost to us, since we don't pay out of our pocket, but through our commissions.

In these times, however, I don't know how much sense it makes for the company's bottom line.

Like many of you, I still enjoy reading my daily news in print (not online).  I subscribe to the Wall Street Journal and relish the mornings with coffee while turning the pages of my paper.

Melissa, I hope you don't mind if I share a link to this post I wrote just recently about how I 'explain' this issue to sellers who don't understand why I don't spend marketing money on print. Sometimes, as Heather pointed out, they just want their house in the paper and I, for one, think it is a total waste! But I DO like a cup of coffee and the front page every now and again!

Melissa - I think we just need to educate our seller clients that newspaper ads are not going to sell their home as much as the internet.  If the seller still wants their home in the newspaper, let them pay for it.  It's kinda like open houses - They are more for the agent to potentially find buyers than they are to sell the home, yet sellers want agents to hold open houses all the time.  It's all about educating the client.

This is hard evidence of the way of the future. Most things are going online. We must be willing to move with the change or we will be left behind.
