Florida Realtors!!! Great News..

Your local and state associations are fighting long and hard for us. Some of the bills that have passed and on their way to the governor are.

HB 1495 which caps Citizens insurance rate hikes to 10% statewide which they requested and rate hike of upwards to 40%. It also repealed the requirement as   effective Jan. 1, 2010, sellers of property located in the wind-borne debris region and which has an insured value on the structure of $500,000 or more.

SB 532 which caps property tax assesments to 5% annually for small buisinesses, non homesteaded properties and second homes. My take: This is a great victory for the state of Florida because we all know the Northeast snowbirds want some relief also as well as our foreign investors. One of the biggest complaints were property taxes.

PROPERTY TAX BREAK FOR MILITARY. Moments ago, the Senate passed HB 833/SJR 1302, a constitutional amendment that, if approved by voters, will provide an additional tax break to homestead property owners who serve in the military. The tax credit will be based on the numbers of days in service. My Take: anytime you can help our troops I am all for it. They deserve to live for free for the job they  do for us. God Bless America..

SB 2282/1043 by Senator Bennett and Rep N. Thompson, the “crash tax” just passed the House and is ready for the Governors signature. This legislation would prohibit local governments from implementing fees to drivers in automobile accidents. FAR’s Public Policy Committee voted to support this bill at the April meeting in Tallahassee during Great American Realtor Days. My take:The thought behind this tax is that it is double taxation since homebuyers are under the impression that when they pay property taxes these services are included.

PROPERTY TAX BILLS ON THE MOVE. A bill sponsored by Rep. Carlos Lopez-Cantera (HB 521) to assist property owners in challenging property tax assessments based on “preponderance of evidence” cleared the House Finance and Tax Committee today. Meanwhile,  HJR 97 by Rep. Carl Domino, which would provide first-time Florida buyers an additional property tax exemption, was voted unanimously out of the Appropriations Council on Education & Economic Development. It’s in the House on second reading. My take: I don't know how many of you have ever tried to dispute your tax bill but I don't even think it is possible to win. It really helps the homeowner with the process. If they come up with a number then they should be able to support that number not the other way around. I know that Miami-Dade alone had 70,000 cases pending for review.
