Ethan Landis can be spotted all over town in his green Prius with his company's logo on the side. He's a green builder. Really green builder. Ethan did the first presentation I ever attended on green renovations, and that was a bunch of years ago.
For the last decade, he has helped to educate homeowners about ways to use a renovation as a way to significantly increase the energy efficiency of their homes. He helps his clients choose building materials, fixtures and appliances that will reduce energy consumption.
The housing stock in Washington is mostly old. In some neighborhoods, like Georgetown and Capitol Hill, some homes date back to the 1700's. In the "newer" neighborhoods, like Chevy Chase and American University Park, most of the homes were built in the 1940's or earlier.
As public awareness has expanded, so has his knowledge of the latest developments in renovation techniques. Ethan and his architect brother and partner, Chris, are experienced with working on historic homes, appreciating the need to preserve the good part of the old.
Ethan's renovations are not only green, they are also pretty stunning. My first case of serious kitchen envy came during a party he and his wife, Jude, had at their home here in Crestwood. It's like they use their own kitchen to showcase all of the bells and whistles he can provide to his clients.
Ethan is currently serving as an advisor to DC Mayor Adrian Fenty on Green building. If you are planning a renovation, Landis Construction's website is a great place to begin.
