It Time to Straighten Up!

Home Stager with Creative Concepts-Home Staging and Contracting, Salem Oregon CCB #180695

Ever look at photos where the floor isn't level - hmmm is it the photo or is the house not structurally sound?  Or noticed a doorway that is at an angle in a photo that you thought would be perfect?

So often when I'm taking photos, I tend to lean to the left or the right - it's a minor lean, but obvious when I'm editing photos and so annoying when everything else in the shot Is great.  I've tried to line my shots up so doorframes are straight, etc, but sometimes when using a wide angle lens it's difficult for us amateur photographers!

I'm SO EXCITED!  I use to edit photos frequently, and have written of its ease of use in prior blogs.  I just stumbled across a new feature - using the rotate button.  This feature not only can rotate a full quarter turn, it also can set a grid up on your photo and allow you to align the photo a few degrees - whatever is needed to make your picture straight.

For example, here was a preliminary photo I took - looks like the tub is sinking into the floor.

help I'm sinking!

Just a couple of seconds editing and wow - we just repaired the house!

I'm on the staight and narrow again!

not quite right

This photo above had a lean to the right and couldn't be used.  After editing it's significantly improved!

beautiful staged den

Check out this great feature when editing your photos.  It's time to straighten up!

The wider the angle lens, the more fish eye distortion too so don't be too hard on yourself or blame it all on leaning. Maybe that hand bag with the wagon jack, cinder block and small dorm size refrigerator in it makes your list to one side when toting a camera? Hmmm... Thanks for the pointers!

Great post, .....My editing software has that feature. I try to remind myself when photographing to start right so editing is minimal,

Thanks, Jess

Amazing how little it takes to throw the room off ... it is something we have made a conscious effort to improve on.

Thanks for sharing.

I have the same problem with leaning pictures. I just recently found the rotate features on Picnik and use it all of the time to edit my pictures.

Thanks for sharing.

Picasa has the same feature but calls it "straighten."  It's miraculous and really comes in handy for us non-pro photographers!

Margaret I use the straighten with Picasa and the grid makes it easy to see how "off" you are.  I will now go looking for it with Picnik.  Thanks.

Great tip, Margaret!  I had no idea you could straighten a picture after you take it.  I usually take multiple shots until I feel comfortable I got it fairly straight.  I can't wait to try this out instead!

I use Picnik all the time and never knew this feature existed.  I assumed Rotate was just to change horizontal to vertical.  Thanks for the insight!  I certainly can use this and I'm sure now that I know it is there, I will use it all the time!

Like Maureen and Ginger, I use Picasa. I have no idea why all my shots are so wonky, I must stand crooked, or perhaps it's the three martini lunch prior to taking the photos. Just kidding! There must be a lot of people besides stagers doing this, or the option wouldn't be on these programs!
