I Survived the Beartooth Pass!

This is the second of a 4 part series on the Beartooth Scenic Byway.  If you want to check the first part, just click on the following link: Highway to Heaven - Don't Pass this Up!  (you will be able to get back here with a link at the end of the first post).

I visited Yellowstone National Park with friends this past weekend.  We took advantage of the fact that the Beartooth Pass just opened recently to make our way from Red Lodge to the Northeast entrance of the Park.  Here is a sample of the photos that show the views from this very scenic Highway which reaches an altitude of almost 11,000 feet.

Above two photos were taken from Vista Point Rest Area (notice the two portions of the highway at two different altitudes).

Yes, there is snow at above 10,000 feet altitude!  The Beartooth Scenic Byway is usually open around Memorial Day Weekend when the road has been cleared of all the snow.

A view from higher above.  The temperature went down to as low as 38 degrees Fahrenheit.  Even in summer time, it is a good idea to bring a sweater as it always cooler at these higher altitudes.  This view gets even better in the summer when the white of snow is replaced with green.

Cindy,

You are welcome.  I am glad you liked them.  We do not have snow in Red Lodge but we can easily go on the Beartooth Highway Pass to see it.   There are lots of avid skiers who head to the higher altitudes to enjoy their favorite sport till the end of spring.  Here is a photo of a group of them that I spotted this past weekend.

Gerry, I'm glad to see you used a motor vehicle instead of a bicycle or heaven forbid snowshoes for this climb...

Very cool photos Gerry!  The Bear Tooth Pass looks very similar to Trail Ridge Road here in Colorado, which is open only seasonally --- usually Memorial Day until the snow makes it impassible ... Thank you for the gorgeous photos today!  Hope you enjoyed the Yellowstone too!

Paul,

Thank you for the chuckle.  I enjoyed the drive in a motor vehicle but I have seen soem that like the challenge and exercise of doing it on a bicycle.

Mary,

You are welcome.  Thank you for the nice comments.  I am sure Trail Ridge Road must have pretty good views too of the mountains (another similarity between "Red" towns).   I enjoyed the Yellowstone but my friend loved his first time experience.
