Stop Saying SEO is Difficult and Start Reading The Directions!

By
Real Estate Agent with Dakno Marketing

I hear people talking all the time about how mysterious Google’s algorithms are. “It’s like playing a game and not knowing the rules” they say. When I hear this, I think to myself, “No. It’s like playing a game without first reading the directions!”

Yes, that’s right. Google gives clear directions on how to win the Google game. The problem is, too many people start to immediately roll the dice - thinking the whole time they are playing the game. When in reality, they don’t even know how the game is played They simply make up their own rules and keep playing. It’s then only a matter of time until they start complaining about how the game is rigged because they can never win. They start asking others how to play the game, even though the directions are lying right beside them. They get 17 different opinions on the game. Half of them haven’t picked up the directions themselves, the other half want to charge them a monthly maintenance fee for training on how the game is played.

No Tricks, No Cheats, Just the directions.

Sorry to disappoint you. This post isn’t about “secret ways to beat the Google Game” - remember Google is worth 133 Billion dollars. That alone is 133 billion reasons why you shouldn’t try to outsmart a company that has an endless budget for perfecting their game.

Now, the Instruction Manual

First, let me say this. Instruction Manuals aren’t flashy. They don’t contain the marketing hype and emotion that everyone loves in SEO. (This is probably the reason why so few people talk about Google’s Instruction Manual.) Google’s instruction manual is not different. It just clearly lays out instructions on how to make your site successful in the search engines.

Google Goes the Extra Mile

In addition to Google’s instruction manual, they also give you your very own control panel that gives you feedback on every area of your site. It tells you if your copy is written correctly, if people are using the correct anchor text, it even tells you what keywords you are ranking for as well as their positions.

Real Time Alerts

In addition to giving you the instruction manual and a control panel, they also supply you with real time alerts on your progress. That’s right; Google goes as far as sending you email alerts when your new content gets added to their index.

People to Guide You Along the Way

If you get stuck, Google provides many different people to help Guide you along the way. They will alert you of upcoming changes and even record videos so you don’t have to read.

Complete Statistics on Your Progress

Finally, Google gives you complete Statistics on your site and how it’s doing in their search engine.

Putting Things In Perspective

Think about it for a moment. I know very few companies that provide this many resources without asking for one penny in return. Google is practically giving away the farm! The issue is not trying to figure out how to secretly beat the game - it’s that SEO companies would rather continue to put up smoke and mirrors so they can include you in their ongoing maintenance fees.

Sure, it’s fun to learn little tricks or try to really work the systems, but first make sure you understand the basics. Read the directions, play by the rules, if you need help, ask for advice or contact a professional.

To Your Success,

Good post Brad. I have been involved in Search Marketing for almost 10 years now and my main focus has been SEO. The basic rules do not really change but the way everything is factored by the algorithm changes all the time. The way links are factored is just one example. When Google first started to gain users everyone figured out that links were extremely important so sites started exchanging links with every other site they could find. Google saw this and tweaked their algo to filter out link farms and shady exchanges. In the last few weeks Google has really come out after paid links designed for ranking purposes only because for a long time sites have been buying links just to increase page rank. They did not change the rules, they simply tightened their algorithm to detect sites trying to game their spider. The main rule is still "Make sites for humans not search engine robots". A lot of people are intimidated by the techno speak in SEO, and I see it all the time where I work. When we have meetings and I talk about SEO and search related issues I get the glazed over eyes and 1000 yard stares. For most site owners the main thing to know is that if users like it Google will like it too. Real Estate is a competitive industry but many of the sites I see are still trying to game Google by using link exchanges (which are fine if you are linking to relevant sites) with anybody who will do it and other grey or black hat techniques. These sites will eventually suffer and the quality sites built with solid SEO fundamentals and user based designs will rise to the top.

Here's something you're unlikely to hear, "Why should I even bother with all this SEO stuff anyway; the people that come to my site don't stay for long and rarely contact me, so what's the point?"  But truth be told, if more Realtors were completely honest about their web site's performance, this would be a common question.

And it's a completely fair question at that! So Brad, or should I say Boss (full disclosure, I work at Dakno Marketing), why is it that people are so willing to discuss the nuances of SEO, but at the same time put a relatively small amount of energy into actually enhancing their site's content?

I think of this very common situation as trying to design a book's cover to get people to buy it, instead of taking the same amount of time to write a story that people will genuinely want to read. Optimizing your site is all well and good, but if the site isn't designed to provide real value and to drive interaction, then it won't equate to more leads, which is kinda the whole point. Right?

Ken: Try to keep up :-) Thats exactly why I wrote this post. You are right on the money. A site MUST convert the visitor into a lead for this whole thing to work!

Thanks for the info....   I am in the process of completely redoing my website.  I constructed the first one hastily and now want to completely redo it with less color and better content.  I had good visibility in yahoo with the first...but horrible visibility with google.  This time, before I play the game, I'm going to read the directions!

But a quick question that I'm having difficulty finding the answer.  I like websites that have a very sophisticated display page that have an "enter" box.  I also know how important "content" is on your first page.  Does a crawler(spider, browser, whatever...I'm not a technical person) consider that "enter" page as the first page....therefore having virtually no content.....or the is the actual first page, the first page that you come to after......."enter"

I hope this question makes sense.....  Thanks

So, just a question...  (and I should preface this by saying that I didn't read all 63 comments, so I apologize if the answer lies within)   are you suggesting that we have all the tools ourselves to affect SEO and that hiring a company (such as yours or your competitors) and signing an annual contract for SEO services is unnecessary?  I feel like I could be adequate, but the experts can really help me shine?  True?

Thx for the great education!

Jennifer
