JUST HOW MANY IS TOO MANY WHEN IT COMES TO PILLOWS ?

By
Home Stager with HOME STYLE AND STAGING LLC

I recently staged a home where I had to work with what the homeowner already had ( budget was tight ). They had several pillows on the bed and I took several off and still feel that maybe just maybe I had too many. I know that several months ago someone placed a post about too many pillows. Shown below is the photo ( Taken in a hurry ) of the bed and the many pillows. What do you think, too many ? not enough ? Just right ? The smaller pillows in front are mine (along with the lamps) and they are a light chartreuse color. I love working with black and chartreuse, in fact my bedroom is alot like this one..

Hi Mary Lou,

It's a personal choice.  However, your gut was right.   For staging purposes, I would have used 2-3 in back, depending on how they looked against the headboard, and only 1 or 2 in front.

If I had the choice, I would have gone with a white sham with a lace trim for front pillows for a lighter, fresher look for summer.

Mary Lou: Good question, especially for those of us who LOVE using pillows for color, texture and dimension. Like you, I find black and chartreuse a great combination providing it flows well with the rest of the home.

My preference for the size of this bed would be as follows:

  • The same three you have in back
  • Two chartreuse, centered in front of those
  • One smaller pillow (round or rectangular if possible), centered in front of the chartreuse in black or white

This way you obtain a layered look with colors of interest that will be easy on the eye. Just my two cents worth here. I'm looking forward to what others have to say as well.

Mary Lou ~ I like black with charteuse as well--this bedding is lovely.  My suggestion for this bed would be 1) three pillows in back, two of the chartreuse in front, and then one more smaller solid white in the center or  2) two pillows in back, then two white regular bed pillows in front of that and a chartreuse centered in front of each of those.  Seems there are usually many good options and it is fun to play around with them.  Thanks for posting this.

I totally agree with just using the two pillows in front of the three larger ones, however, when I did that the two got lost, and when you use three it did not balance either...However, the idea of three and then maybe one in front of the three is a good idea and when I go back over to the home I will see how that looks...thanks for the ides...

Mary Lou....  Pillows Pillows Pillows!!I love the bedset!  Niel color combo.. looks like there are as many way to place pillows as there are actual pillows.  I would of went with 3 black in the back and 3 green in the front and end with a neck roll down front.

Thanks for the nice pic's.

Hi Mary Lou:

I would have loved to see a before and after...

I'm not a big "multiple pillow" fan either...

Have a great day, keep up the great work!

Although it looks good like you have it, it may be a little too pillowy.  I would do 3 in the back, 2 chartruese and then a single solid black in front of those two.

OhMyGawd!  Do I see a couple more pillows sprouting from the side?  Stop - they're multiplying!!!!

3 - 2 - 1 is my favorite pillow combination!  You used a fun color combo here.

Okay, too funny, I am the Odd-Stager-Out here. I LIKE your pillows! The solid color feels good and simple to me. It's a nice strong band of color. All the added layers in front of each other starts to feel fussy and predictable to me. The only thing I might have liked better is if your chartreuse was a long streamlined roll the width of the bed or just a few inches less on each side. That's IMHO. :-)

This is why I love having a staging partner.  Pillow placement is her thing.

I agree with Debra Valentine on the pillow selection and placement (3 back, 2 centered in middle, one small rectangle in front).  Also, for warm weather I would fold a white crocheted coverlet at the foot of the bed to lighten up the room or use a white coverlet on the bed and fold the darker comforter at the foot.  I think people like to see luxurious layered beds.
