Marathon RunThe 28th annual Mercedes-Benz Cotton Row Run was held near Big Springs Park.  There was a 10K (6.2 miles) run that started at 7 am this morning.  There was a 5K (3.1 miles) that begain at 10 am and a 1 mile Fun Run aiming to attract children 10 and under and their adult companions that went through historic downtown.  Security, traffic control, and medical support provided for the safety of all the participants.  The Cotton Row Run is conducted by the Huntsville Track Club and for the past 27 years has drawn runners from all over the country.  Lodging was provided by Holiday Inn Downtown Huntsville and there were numerous local companies sponsoring the event.  Papa John's provided free pizza to all the runners, Pepsi Cola provided soft drinks to all the runners, and Garden Cove Produce provided bananas, water, and Gatorade.

There are prizes for the 10K winners including: top seven overall male and female finishers, top 5 male and female finishers over 40, and additional cash and prizes for individuals that set course records.  Our very own Huntsvillian, David Riddle, was the top local finisher.  He finished in a time of 32:12 just 2 minutes and 10 seconds behind the first place male winner Alene Reta from Ethiopia.  The women's dividision was won by Silvia Skvortsova of New York, who also broke the 2003 women's course record with a time of 33:20.  trophy

Be careful when traveling downtown and remember that many of the streets have been closed for the safety of the participants.  Leave early and be prepared for possible alternate routes.  Have a happy and safe Memorial Day.
