The Haleakala Silversword is found only on the island of Maui on the slopes of Mt. Haleakala, a dormant volcano. They grow in volcanic cinder, and the leaves are covered with silver hairs. The skin and hairs are strong enough to resist the wind and freezing temperatures and protect the plant from dehydration. My photo shows a young plant on the right, next to an older one at the end of its life. The plant flowers only once during a life span of up to 50 years, then withers and dies. It is a threatened species that is strictly monitored and protected by the government.

Thank you all for stopping by to take a look.

I have never heard of that plant, and the story is very interesting!  I love how plants, animals and all things natural adapt to their surroundings, growing in the only place that will sustain them...Love it...

Now there's a very interesting, furry looking .... plant?? :)
The smaller one reminds me of a porcupine.

One day, I hope to see you in (your) paradise. :)
