Home Depot or Lowe's?

I have purchased materials at both Home Depot and Lowe's and really have no preference. However, I have found that the workers at Lowe's on Bouquet Canyon are quite knowledgable and helpful. I usually send my clients to the Home Depot on Newhall Ranch Road because it is larger and cleaner. When I am working for women they tend to prefer Home Depot so I go wherever they prefer, as it is their choice. It is a good idea to compare prices. Usually both stores will honor the sale price of the other, if you speak with the manager or someone up front. I like to save my clients as much money as possible. Newhall Hardware Store on San Fernando Road also has many good items.

Our Home Depot is closer and typically has better prices than Lowe's, but the hired help isn't very helpful.

In my small town of approximately 15,000 people, we just had a Lowes open right next door to Home Depot.  It certainly does make comparison shopping easier.  They both seem pretty similar to me, although the Lowes is a bit more of a polished look, as opposed to our Home Depot, which is more like a lumberyard/warehouse.

It doesn't really matter to me between Lowe's or Home Depot.  Home depot used to be less expensive for the same items.  For good quality lumber and non-standard parts I use local companies like Dunn Lumber and McLendons.  For the size of Lowe's and Home Depot, there is sure a lot of things that they don't stock.  They keep referring me to McLendon's and Dunn Lumber.

Home Depot Because:

  1. They sponsor Tony Stewart's NASCAR ride.
  2. The nearest Lowes is an hour away.

I like Lowe's better. I'm not sure why, but it might be because the Lowe's near me is large and clean.

Interesting question. Fun to see all the answers. For me, it is usually Home Depot. There was/is a Lowe's right across the street from it. The Lowes used to be old and small. Now they just built a new super store so I am curious to go into it and see what has changed in the few years since I've been there.

Tossup in my view. Neither is excellent, either will do in a pinch.

I don't recommend using Home Depot contractors. We buy materials there, but we've had bad experiences with their independent contractors. I think they should be screened better.

Don't forget the Lowes REALTOR® Benefit program for that one time large purchase for your clients. That alone can save them hundreds of dollars.

Lowes Hands down...Better products and selection, clean neat stores, better knowledge from staff. When making a puchase of say $200 or more I will drive the 45-50 minutes to Lowes when Home Depot is 10 Minutes away from me. Don't ever special order from Home Depot, what a nightmere!

I often go to Newhall Hardware because it's one of the only "true" hardware stores around.  I always try to support the small business owner when I can.  They are like a convenience store you can get in and out pretty quickly.  They aren't the cheapest in town but if you factor the time you save you probably break even.  I usually find most of what I am looking for there.  They always have plenty of people to help you out as well.  I also go to both Lowes and Home Depot and occasionally to "Do it center" when convenient it also depends when.  Bouquet Canyon gets crazy at rush hour!!

Home depot traditonaly has been set up for contractors, and the Do It Your Self type people.  Lowes is really laid out for the home owner.  Lowes stores are much brighter and have a wider selection of home applainces and home decor type items.

We are Santa Clarita's EnergyStar Partner Contractor and we often shop for Energystar items at Lowe's and Home Depot.   Now that Newhal Hardware is gone, OSH is the largest selection for Hardware (nuts and bolts).
