Moving to Glenview? How to Make Your Next Move a Green One

We should all try to be eco-friendly wherever possible, and during a move is no exception. Here are some Have an Eco-Friendly Movegreat ways to save the planet one box at a time when moving:

Start packing early. This gives you plenty of time to sort things out, recycling what you can or selling things at a yard sale.

Hire an eco-friendly mover. Look at movers' advertisements to see if they stress that they're eco-friendly. Take note if they sell recyclable packing materials.

Stock up on boxes from stores or friends who are moving. Many stores send boxes away for recycling when they're finished with them. Ask these places if you can have some of their boxes. You can still recycle them when you're finished with them. Look on free websites to see if anyone is offering moving boxes, or ask friends or neighbors who may have moved recently to use their boxes. If you must buy boxes, be sure to buy only recycled ones.

Bubble wrap and other packing materials can also be reused so, while you're out collecting boxes to use, check on packing materials as well. These products are handy to have even if they aren't that environmentally friendly, so it's a great idea to try to recycle rather than buy new if possible.

Use suitcases, tote bags and plastic storage containers that you already own to pack in. Clothes are especially suited for suitcases, and tote bags and dishes go well in plastic storage containers. You may even be able to pack some things (your underwear!) in the plastic bags that come from discount and grocery stores.

When moving furniture with drawers, simply leave items in the drawers, remove the drawers from the furniture and carry them to the moving van, reinsert them into the furniture, and then carry them in separately when you reach your new home. This saves not only moving time, but packing time as well.

Don't forget to recycle what's left (Northbrook and Wilmette have easily accessible recycling areas) when your move is finished. List boxes and packing materials online, give them to friends who are about to move, or at least take them to recycling places, but don't just throw them away!
