Just made the trip over Cottonwood Pass the weekend after Memorial Day to see what things look like. This photo was taken at around 11, 900 feet on the paved Chaffee County side of the Contenintal divide. The pass typically may still have a drift from the avalanche of the cornice at this time of the year. As you can see there is still about a 20 foot high cornise about to come down once the sun warms the hillside. Snowmobilers do not cross this pass in winter because of the avalanche danger. There are plentiful deer still roaming the streets of Buena Vista, Colorado in the broad daylight. Moose and elk are plentiful and are being seen in larger numbers than last year. The creeks are running high but clear everywhere we looked. River rafters are getting out in cautious groups as the rapids are running big and the water is cold!
Green grass is sprouting everywhere in the State of Colorado but the days are warm when the sun comes out. So get out the fishing rods and the shorts and sunscreen and enjoy, but bring a jacket and rain gear as this looks to be a wet spring!
