An infamous day in History:Remembering D Day

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker

It is hard to believe it has been 65 days since a large coalition of soldiers landed on that beach in Normandy. As the Waukesha County Real estatemarket goes about it's daily activity I will take time out to remember all those brave people that combined to achieve a turning point in WWII. June 6th,1944, was when 160,000 allied troops landed along a 50 mile stretch of coastline to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. General Dwight D. Eisenhower said "we will accept nothing less than full victory." More than 9,000 allied soldiers were killed or wounded in the D-Day operation, however more than 100,000 marched their way across Europe to defeat Hitler. The Invasion of Normandy was the invasion and establishment of Allied forces in Normandy, France, during Operation Overlord in World War II. Tom, How nice that you wrote about this important day that changed history!  I haven't seen any other posts yet but I hadn't forgotten what today is either.

Schindler's list is a great movie; the end where they are putting the roses on the grave is a tear jerker.

Can you imagine the anxiety that day if you were one of those guys in the boats, or parachutes?

I missed seeing Normandy when we were in France and wish we had gone there. Thanks for the reminder about what today is. We all should remember Normandy. I'm afraid as years go on and more and more people who lived through that time are not around, it may get lost. I hope not.

Tomorrow's the day to watch Band of Brothers.  A MUST HAVE in one's video library.  And not to forget The Longest Day.  My dad was on one of the first ships out of NYC after Pearl Harbor, he missed D Day, but arrived in time to be in The Battle of the Bulge.( My parents met at Fort Benning..Dad was injured in the Pacific and spent time at Fort Benning recouperating and teaching in between the pacific and going to Eruope)  My brother was born on my Dad's birthday Dec. 11, in 1944...my Mom didn't know if my Dad was alive or dead or what until sometime after the holidays...but he survived, and was thrilled that he had a son..his JR!  I came along during the after war glow of peace.

Thank you to of you band of brothers..the greatest generation!

Elizabeth,

Somehow I think it all too sad and true that many will forget. It seems that time has a funny was of fogging things at times.

Ryan,

Like Elizabeth made mention, as time goes by it gets cloudier. I hope not; I hope people later in life realize how this could have meant a lot of difference in history had it went different.
