There is a recent fraud case that has recieved alot of media attention. A women put her house for sale in Ontario and it was stolen from her! Identity thieves took out a fraudulent mortgage on her home for almost $300,000.00.

In an interview with REM the women told the magazine that she couldn't "stress enough how devastating it has been both financially and emotionally. To have to fight to get her home back over the past 12 months". After a year of legal battles going all the way up to the Ontario court of Appeal she is finally the rightful owner of her home again.

How in the world could this happen?

A fraud theif might visit a home for sale, most probably a "for sale by owner," as their is less chance of being caught. They in the house for a "viewing" and assesses their opportunity. If they can't collect what they need while in the home with the seller they may come back when the seller is not home and break in to gather the documents and information they need. They may even enter into negotiations with the seller to stop other buyers who might be interested to give them more time.
