Today all four of us piled into the little VW Beetle, my husband, myself, our 12 year old daughter and my mother-in-law for a long and eventful trip. Road trip was the plan for the day, we left Salem headed up 1-5 north bound took hwy 217 to the sunset highway and took the scenic route up to Astoria to cross the BIG bridge into Washington. I had never been to Astoria in fact none of us had.
The Columbia river was choppy and very gray and angry looking. I shared the if I had been a pioneer story with the family as we drove. You know "if I had been a pioneer traveling with Lewis and Clark, I would have stayed on the Oregon side, one look at the Columbia river and I would have known for sure I was quite happy staying dry and just looking at the river with my eyes" I was surprised at all the forts up along the Columbia river originally used for protection from what I'm not sure? I took lots of pictures many of which are attached we just got home 14 hours and 365 miles later....
This is a picture of the long bridge in Astoria and this is a sign on the Hotel located at the base of this large bridge.
While we drove I began taking pictures I couldn't help myself regarding this one! What other kind of wood is there?????
We drove to Seaside, Tillamook, Sand Lake, Lincoln City and all the other roadside stops with rest areas... We got ice cream at the Tillamook cheese factory, watched people ride 4 wheelers at Sand Lake without helmets, and finally ate our way through the buffet at the casino.
None of us are looking forward to getting back into the car anytime soon. But we sure did spend some close quality time together as a family bonding and laughing our way down highway 101....
