Oh the Places You Will Go!

By
Home Stager with GreatStages Home Staging and Redesign

I have met many wonderful people over the past couple of years since I launched my staging business and I have had lots of fun experiences. I continue to be surprised and inspired by this career, which makes it even more rewarding.

Recently I completed a project that went in directions that I never anticipated and that challenged me to the hilt! A church in my area decided to open a "satellite campus" in a strip mall. The space was stark white and very utilitarian. The budget was extremely limited and volunteers were needed to transform the space in a mere three weeks. I volunteered to source paint at a 15% discount. Little did I know that I would be tackling something much larger.

Volunteering to simply help purchase paint at a discount led to

being asked to develop a color palette for the interior - which led to

being asked to design window treatments to block light and improve acoustics - which led to

constructing the window treatments alongside the finish carpenters - which led to

being asked to select light fixtures - which led to

helping with selection of seating - which led to

selecting fabric and helping with construction of stage draperies - which led to

another whole set of projects related to the children's area!

Exterior Before   - A strip mall                                                Interior Before - Definitely not a church!

                 Interior After -

The client wanted a warm look, that was nontraditional and appealing to the younger age demographic that attends this church.

Devine Paints in their new No VOC formula were used and the palette was from the Flora and Fauna collection.

Komodo was the ceiling color

Buffalo was the Art Wall color

Persian was used on two walls

Sarsaparilla was used at the front and at the coffee bar area along with a pop of

Cactus which was the  accent color at the coffee bar.

Designing for a commercial space was a whole new area for me, but I believe in accepting new challenges and hanging on for the ride when you head into unknown territory. Try it - you will be surprised  at the places you will go!

Kathy congratulations on a job very well done!  I love the contrasts and the upbeat color scheme.  I've often wonder how someone makes a strip mall space into a church and now I know.  Did the put a little plaque in the church giving you credit for the job?  You might ask for one.

That's awesome, Kathy.  I too love what you've done. You should be extremely proud of what you accomplished.  Commercial projects are indeed so different but... you proved you can do it (and do it well!!).

Maureen - Thank you so much for your kind comments. I love the art wall, too. They plan to use the space for various community events and it will be interesting to see future exhibits there.

Ginger - I have to admit that I didn't quite get the "vision" when I first viewed the space. There is a Yoga studio on the other side  - which was another reason for needing acoustic improvements between the spaces!

No plaque, but I was honored at a fantastic barbeque!

Kathy - Thank you! It was a challenge and I would welcome the chance to do another project like it in the future. This is a tough time for many small businesses but if they could find money to make small, yet effective, changes they might find their business attracts more customers.

Kathy, what a wonderful opportunity! The space now has such personality, warmth, and character. You really did a fantastic job for them. They are going to enjoy this space for many years to come. What a great showcase for your talents.

Hi Peg - Yes, it was a great opportunity and I am grateful for the trust they placed in me to see it through. You also touched on something that was constantly on my mind - that this wasn't a temporary staging. Everything I did had to last and would be used for years. Thanks for your kind comments!

WOW!!!!! What a transformation...  Who knew that a strip mall could be a church... Learn something new everyday.  This is nothing like the churdh I grew up with.....  You really never know what even the smallest project will turn into.  I am sure this is not the last job that will spin off of this....

Thank you, Margaret. It was challenging, but I enjoyed every minute. The nicest part has been the gratitude of members who continue to express how much the space means to them.
