The 50th Annual Putnam County Dairy Festival in living color.

I was very disappointed there were no live cows this year.  It was kind of sad to me.  49 years of cows stomping around the court house square and then bam, no more live cows.

So I did take a picture of the one HUGE cow that came to be a part of the parade.  Mayfield is always a part of our Dairy Festival and on the court house square all day long you can get free milk, free chocolate milk and free ice cream.  I guess for the kids this is the very favorite part of the festivities.

Seemed to also be a super big crowd this year and while I was attempting to get some good photographs people were mingling in front of me and I'm not one to push my way to the front, so I hope you enjoy these pictures I took of the parade.

The restored ladder truck was driven by my Uncle Eugene Hubert who is the Eatonton Assistant Fire Chief and if you missed my earlier post with the "firehouse" doggie in the window I thought he was really cute.

The couple in the convertible are this years selected Dairy Family and then the Dairy Queen and her court.

I wish I could have gotten a better picture of the Pilot Club FLoat.  They had children dressed up as cows.

Now I'm not sure about the idea of a cow angle, but this church had one on their float along with Joseph, Mary and Baby Jesus.  It's one of those things you had to see to believe I think.

And there were lots of tractors, after all we were celebrating Dairy Farmers.  And of course you can see we had a huge crowd.  There were side streets filled with crafts, and street food.  I ate my annual blooming onion.  I as a rule do not eat fried foods, but just once a year I just have to have my blooming onion.  And there was some awesome entertainment on the court house lawn in the afternoon.

So next year I'll be back again at the 51st Annual Putnam County Dairy Festival.  Maybe I'll walk around and see the crafts during the parade to beat the crowd.  :)  And avoid the LONG line my daughter and I waited in to get our onion.

Hope to see you there next year too.  The Dairy Festival is ALWAYS the FIRST SATURDAY of JUNE.

Hi Tammy, Wow, it looks like a great turnout for the Dairy Festival!  Too bad about the live cows,  I guess everyone is cutting back these days! :-)  Your photos are great of the parade - very festive!

Diane- spending time with my daughter is always a plus, and my mom and dad were also there for the parade.  Was a really nice time.

Mary- I know, but I keep hearing on TV that Dairy cows are now becoming ground beef because milk prices have dropped so much. YIKES.

So nobody knows for sure why there were no live cows? I'd be sad too if I was used to seeing live cows, and then there weren't any =(

Sheldon- I'm wondering if it would be a suprise to you that it's not all that uncommon for me to see a tractor on the road.  Although it is quite rare to see them at a red light in town. Oh well, I have a friend with cows, I'll just go and pay them a visit.

Thanks Sharon. The event has such a great history.  And I can't wait until our um "weekly" newspaper comes out and see if there is an explanation as to why no cows were there.

Lisa- I'm sure someone knows, but that someone isn't me yet.  I'm working on it.

Tammy, I love parades when there are tractors, children and floats pulled by either tractors or pickups!

Tony and Darcy- me too.

Sheldon- Come on, I'll take you to the pickle barrel where you can order fried dill pickles or to PJ's where you can order fried green beans or to Judy's where you can have fried Green Tomatoes.  Of course there are a few not fried things on the menu :)

Looking at pitures of your parade and town takes me home to Kahoka, MO, the small town I grew up in.  Thanks for the flashback!  I don't recall and free ice cream though.....Looks like Putnam CO has that little something extra to offer :~)

Terri- so far so good, but I read in the local paper that dairy farmers are really hurting in this economy.  Those milk cows might be ground beef soon.

I agree with you. How in the heck can you have a dairy festival with no live cows? That doesn't make sense!
