SNAKE Patrol & Relocation at the Home Office (Just another day in the jungle)

By

I have a garter snake in my front flower bed that shocks visitors from time to time.

He likes to hang out in the clematis right beside the steps. I was ok with him till a few of my friends were saying that they would rather come into the house around back. Believe me I am no fan of snakes. I have whacked quite a few at my creek since living here. Now as long as I see them first I am not too fearful.

I also notice that I am opening the front door carefully again. Just as I did when the Robin family was perched precariously on the wreath. Stepping on him in the night when taking my dog out is not something I want to dream about later.

Yesterday, I decided to relocate him to the creek flower bed. Usually, he appears several times a day to work on his suntan on the clematis. All day I kept an eye on it through the window. Finally there he was! I rushed around to prepare...5 gallon bucket, Bar B Q tongs and a shovel just in case I decide to whack him!

Quietly like an Indian, I tiptoed out to pluck him from the vine with the tongs. I wondered if they were long enough because I didn't want him to wrap up my arm! Reaching out I touched him and whoops! Well...I didn't get a good grip and he slithered off to bug me again today.

I left all my equipment in place and will update you on my progress.

Friends and clients, be very afraid till this commando mission is complete!

Lizette, I don't know if it's where you live but these animals are trying to tell you something....Ever hear of Animal Cards?  They tell you what animals MEAN. I know it sounds weird but doing the community service project last year I had ALL EYES on me.....and got Mice.  A friend looked it up:  "With their beady little eyes they are scrutinizing everything you do."  Never heard anything more accurate in my life!

Carole - I wonder what meaning a snake would have. Ask your friend. Now that he knows I have been looking for him he has been on vacation. The 2 kittens that came up to me have found new homes and the 3 birds have flown out to be in the world. What's going on here?

I don't know, Lizette, I always thought the birds would have brought you luck.  She swears by that book and believes you see animals for a reason....and each animal means something.  I'm not sure if she's right but it fit exactly in my case!  I'll see if I can find out....btw, I think it is called "Animal Speaks"

Lizette,

There are some snakes that smell when they change their skin, I did not know that, but I went once to a friend's home and he had some snakes and it was a rare smell and he told me that were the snakes, I got close enough to them and yes, they were :)   Yuck !!!!!

Thanks Carole! I will be interested in hearing what you can find out.

Ray - That's crazy stuff. I don't plan on getting that close to see if he has a smell.

Lizette:  I did a little research for you on the meaning of Garter Snakes (since my friend may take EONS in getting back to me).  This isn't much but all I could find:  Garter snakes are  associated with the mind and the head, wisdom, peace, justice, perfection, creativity, good judgement, royalty, clouds, mountains, snow, etc.  Make any sense to you?

Animal Speak: The Spiritual & Magical Powers of Creatures Great & Small (Paperback)
by Ted Andrews (Author) "There was a time when humanity recognized itself as part of nature, and nature as part of itself..." (more)
Key Phrases: nuestra cordera, reptile totems, fetish bowl, New York, Brukner Nature Center, Native American (more...)
(91 customer reviews)     And that's the book that she refers to.

Let me know what you think....any of the above words make sense??

I guess all of the words make sense if I associate each one with my life. It's kind of like fortune telling, then you start seeing what they tell you will happen! Thoughts become real.

We have three to five snakes that frequent our back yard.  Only once have we seen them in the front of the house, it was a Saturday afternoon, and my wife was going out to get some lunch and happened upon one of the legless friends sunning on the front steps.  I was alerted to the snakes presence immediately by the ear piercing scream only audible to my dog who politely notified me that my wife was in distress.

Brian, it's great to have an alarm system like that. My dog has no idea what a snake is. She is never around when one shows up. Just my luck.

Luisa, Chanel is very clingy when she feels threatened. If I pick her up she wraps her paws around my arm and holds on tight! It's pretty funny!

SNAKES!

I'm very fearful of snakes and don't want one anywhere close by. When I first moved into this planned neighborhood, many of my neighbors were finding snakes in their home, garages, yard, tanning on the porch, etc. Not until over a month ago did I find my first visitor in the master bathroom. It was about 8 inches long. The kind that chases crickets and worms.  I thought I was going to have a heart attack and haven't been able to sleep and enjoy my home since that night. Having a house built on a slab with vinyl sidding doesn't help at all. I suspect that it slithered its way along the pipes leading in behind the double vanity. Once I got it into the bucket, it was history.

Now I keep tons of moth balls handy.  According to my mother, the smell will keep the lizzards and snakes away. so far it has worked but then again, I'm not looking for snakes either.

Carolyn - I believe that the snakes are not too happy when we move into their homes. I think you and I had the same problem becuse of being in a new neighborhood. Mine was a new construction that backs up to a creek. I killed at least 6 snakes the first year. Not any this year other than seeing the one out front. The moth balls would keep me away too! Lord how I hate the smell!!!!!

Danny - Funny thing is that once he knew he was on my radar he has disappeared. Hmmm....I hope this isn't a pattern developing. We have some copperheads here but I know he wasn't one.
