So what’s a good Facebook Vanity URL? This is harder than picking out a tattoo.

By
Real Estate Agent with Eau Claire Realty, Inc.

I have a pretty simple blog post here. What’s a good Facebook vanity URL? We only have a couple days to decide but it’s sort of like getting a tattoo in that it’s permanent. Will your Facebook URL get saggy, wrinkly and hairy? Will you want to remove it with a laser when you get older?

Seriously what are you going to pick and why? Please post in comments below.

Don’t forget its FRIDAY at 11PM your time zone and not Saturday.

So I guess the question is this:

Your town + keywords real estate, real estate agent, or realtor?

or Your town + homes for sale

but do I want to be called Eau Claire Real Estate Agent on facebook the rest of my life?

and which is better Eau Claire Real Estate or Eau Claire Real Estate Agent?

What about just my town Eau Claire?

Ugggghhh!!!!!

Hi Shane~ I had not realized this.  Picking out a tattoo would be easy because I have no interest in getting one,LOL!  I am going to have to think about the FaceBook thing though.  Have you decided yet?

Hi Shane,

I have been thinking about it but will probably just keep my own name.  What are your thoughts on that?  I only use Facebook for personal use.  If I were to change to Oakville Real Estate or something like that, if people searched by my name Jenny Kotulak would they find me?

Jenny I think people would find you either way but more people are more likely to be searching for real estate related terms rather than your name. If they do a search on face book for your name they would already find you and if they googled your name you would come up hundreds of times for various blog posts and your websites etc. But the big BUT is do you want your profile facebook/oakvillerealestate or facebook/jenny? I almost think Facebook/Shane would be pretty cool. But first names are going to go fast if they arent already taken by staffers.

Hi Shane ~ I went with my name since it's a forever thing (what's forever online?). I figure I could do a real estate one on the page I'll create but that won't be until later since I can't see getting 1000 fans anytime soon.

The Facebook vanity URL will have little impact on SEO as its simply a redirected URL and basic URL masking. Its your account user name that registers on search....just like LinkedIn and MySpace. There are ways to get a slight push from SEO on your username but its not easy. They only allow 4 words in a username and reject anything that appears to be commerical. You can use brokerage awareness and search terms in your own username, but only if there are very few organic search results....For example, the facebook username 'Mary Cruz At CbBain' shows up 5th when a user searches the term CBBain (her brokerage) instead of CBBain.com or ColdwellBankerBain. It is not uncommon for people to search for broker sites using truncated names and misspellings. Based on a tool I used, the term CBBain, was typed in 48 out of every 1 million searches. This is significantly better results than if Mary used just her name as her Facebook Username.

As vanity URLs have little impact on SEO, it makes the most sense to select a facebook vanity URL that is easy to remember and easy to use on marketing pieces if you intend to drive traffic to your facebook page as a primary destination.

Also the 1000 fan rumor is misleading many people. If you have a 'FRIENDS' (not FANS) page you can select your vanity URL today regardless of number of friends.

So Shane ~ What did you end up doing?  I just did my name since I figure I'll have that forever - and assume I won't work forever - though time will tell.
