John,

It is difficult to balance if you don't have a mapped out strategy that points to your end game.  In other words, your goal is most likely to get new clients, so you are on these sites networking, but do you have a place where you point your connections to, do you have a marketing strategy in place for your social networking?  These are the questions you need to ask yourself so that you become more balanced in your efforts.  When your purpose is there balance is easier to achieve.

You left out twittering! Or Tweeting.

I try to limit myself to one hour a day of social/media time. Its best to do it daily, like excercise, but in moderation like TV and junk food.

Take care,

Ken

Sharon is right on the money with ping.com.  The social media can get overwhelming.  I use ping.com to distrubute my messages but spend most of my time social networking on facebook.  My blogs from AR get sent to facebook and twitter.

I am not convinced at the effectiveness of many of the sites, but I have gotten a few deals because of my connection on facebook.
