OK. So this is the first in a series of posts about Podcasting for the real estate industry. Let me fist answer this basic question:

What is a Podcast?

Answer: A Podcast is Audio or Video that is "Wrapped" in an RSS 2.0 iTunes Compatable Feed.

Audio & Video Podcasts can be used for many purposes in the Real Estate industry.

Audi & Video Podcasting is a way that real estate agents can extend their brand online, become the respected "GO TO" person in any local real estate market by sharing thier knowledge in a podcast format.

Question: How is this different from video or audio on a website and why should I care?

Answer: first, adio/video on a website is not a podcast. Second, Because podcasts are "wrapped" in an RSS Feed the search engines treat this content differently and consequently the information tend to achieve higher rankings in the search engines which translates into more leads, online traffic, more listing, etc. The reason you should care is this technology is rapidly becoming used by millions of consumers online.

Question: Do you need an ipod?

Answer: NO. This is the big urban myth and most common misconception about podcasting. Users can watch/listen to your podcasts right on their desktop ot they can play them on thier iPod or watch them on their TREO cell Phone.

Question: Is this podcasting thing just a fad?

Answer: Most definately not. There are currently over 50,000 podcasts out there currently and trend on the side of consumers make the number reach well into the millions. Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, and major corporations such as Pfizer, Oracle, IBM are embracing this technology you can be that it is here to stay as a communication medium. The Neilson Ratings people just released a report about podcasting usage... so you can bet that podcasting is not a fad.

So this ends part 1. Leave your questions and I will answer them in the upcoming posts. I have also authored a white paper on podcasting back in early 2005 that I will share in this community very soon. You can see over 200 blog posts that I have done about podcasting and how businesses can use this technology here.

I will also be Blogging & Podcasting extensively about audio & video podcasting for the real estate industry here.

Cheers.

Rodney,

Thanks for the post.  You explained the basic quesion I had about podcasts:  why should I care.  I didn't know that search engines give podcasts more wieght in rankings.  That alone is a reason to explore their use.

Thanks for all the info.  I look forward to seeing more along these lines.

Another suggestion, I think to successfully market podcasting to the real estate industry as a whole you need to break it down one more step beyond search engines.  How does it help me sell homes and make money? :)

Interesting and having been doing it for a few months now I still need to see how it will add to the bottom line.  Perhaps more interviews with clients and not just our view point will help too.

Thanks for the post!

Teri,

We have cleints can that directly attribute Millions of dollars of sales to their blogsite. Podcasting is slightly behind blogging on the adoption curve in the real estate industry, but I will tell you from YEARS of podcasting experience that it works and will contribute in a mjor way to the bottom line and the ROI is very strong.

I will explain in much more detail in an upcoming series on podcasting benefits.

Interviews with clients is definately 1 aspect that can be leveraged, but there are about 20 more ways... I don't want to overload people here... but a huge brain dump is forthcoming that will wake all realtors and agents up.

What I'm anxiously anticipating is XM or Sirius creating an iPod-like device that allows for 2-way communication for a cheap price.

Everyone could then have their own call-in show like everyone now has a blog.

Just futurecasting here....

I may have missed this in your post - I want to do my own podcasts. Can you provide websites where I can get an easy education on how to do a podcast?

Thanks,
Linda

I would love to help you buy or sell your home!
hello Rodney --- I have scrolled thru quite a few of your blogs on Active Rain about podcasting. I cannot follow most of the links...when clicked on, they don't pull through. My question is... I know how to recorde a podcast and save it...where to I publish it or how can I link the actual podcast to active rain? Is there a provider that you recommend?
