About

Westmorland is located in the fertile Imperial Valley in Southeastern California.  We are a small residential community that sits along state Highway 86.  Westmorland is 12 miles south of the Salton Sea, 87 miles southeast of Palm Springs, 122 miles east of San Diego, 192 miles southeast of Los Angeles, 261 miles west of Phoenix, Arizona, and 31 miles north of Mexicali, Mexico.

The City of Westmorland was incorporated in 1934 and now has a populations of approximately 2,444 residents (as of 2006).  Current city leaders want to retain the small town feel, but bring growth to the city.  For additional information, call City Hall at 760-344-3411 to request our Marketing Information packet.

Tourism

Because of Westmorland's central location in the Imperial Valley, many points of interest and recreation areas are well within a short driving distance.  The mild winter and spring temperatures allow for many outdoor activities such as ATV riding in Glamis, golfing, bird watching at the Salton Sea, or just exploring our diverse desert areas.  In November the Cattle Call parade and rodeo in Brawley is a great time to be here.  Summer temperatures are bearable due to well air conditioned homes and businesses throughout the area, including the Imperial Valley Mall.

While visiting Westmorland be sure to stay at our brand new Super 8 hotel and dine at our fine eating establishments, such as the renowned Town Pump restaurant.

Glamis - "Sand Toy Capitol of the World" The Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area - better known as Glamis located 34 miles east of Westmorland on Highway 78 - is famous throughout Southern California and Arizona as the sand toy capitol of the world. Attracting visitors numbering in the hundreds of thousands on holiday weekends during the winter months, the dunes are 40 miles long and five miles wide. Rising as high as 300 feet, the dunes offer an activity the whole family can enjoy.  On holiday weekends, rigs from the Coachella Valley, Riverside, San Bernardino and Los Angeles areas of Southern California stream through Westmorland on their way to a fun week or weekend in the dunes.

Golfing There are four golf courses in the Imperial Valley, the nearest to Westmorland being the Del Rio Country Club in Brawley.  The other three are Barbara Worth Resort in Holtville, Lakeview golf course in Seeley and the Broken Spoke golf course in El Centro.  Within one hours drive there are several more golf courses in Yuma, Borrego Springs, and Palm Springs.

Salton Sea For year-round recreation there's no place like the Salton Sea. Located just 12 miles north of Westmorland, the best time to visit is during the spring, winter and fall months with county, state and federal recreation facilities to acquaint the visitor with its wonders.  Salton Sea is the largest lake in California covering 380 square miles. It is 35 miles long and about 15 miles wide at its widest point and about 50 feet deep at its deepest point. The Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge is a treasure of the Sea's ecological systems, especially birds. Farther north the Salton Sea State Recreation Area encourages camping, fishing, bird watching and just plain relaxing.  Salton Sea is a major stop for migratory birds on the Pacific Flyway. At least 375 different species of birds annually visit the wetlands along the shores of the sea as well as the agricultural fields, canals and drains that feed it. The annual Salton Sea International Bird Festival attracts enthusiasts from all over the world. The Sea is considered one of the world's most productive fisheries, attracting recreationists year around.
