Assign Yourself Top Dollar-Producing Activities

"I wasted time, and now doth time waste me." - Shakespeare

Two thousand three-hundred hours. If you're a typical agent, that's how many hours you'll work this year, according to NAR. That's a lot of time to get sidetracked and end up down an unproductive, frustrating, and rocky road.

Has it happened to you? It happens to us all. Knowing - and embracing - dollar-productive activities can keep you on the smooth, freshly-paved freeway to more profits, more efficiency, and more fulfillment in your real estate career.

How do you assess how you spend you time?

First, you have to know where the problem is before you can fix it. Inventory your time. Write out everything you're doing now to find the less productive task sounds.

When I first started working with one of my clients, Char MacCallum, CRS, Char MacCallum Real Estate Team in Olathe, KS, we broke down all her activities and assigned a dollar figure to each one.

Then, where it was more profitable to hire someone to check listings or put up signs, for example, we hired an assistant at a pay rate much lower than Char's.

This is not saying that many small details in a business are not important.  "The devil's in the details" could be another post.  It's just that some important things have a market value less than what your time is worth an hour.  Even if you pay generously to have these tasks done, you will be money ahead.

For additional information and guidance on this topic we have posted an article on our website entitled "Only Time Will ‘Sell'" for you to review.

Hi Bob - Thanks for your post.  Time management is important as is how you work with clients.  I've tracked how I spend my time and have tried to steamline my efforts over time.  I've eliminated those things that I refer to as "spinning my wheels activities" and have tried to work more efficiently.  When it comes to clients, however, I will invest the time necessary to get the job done right.

I have  found by not "trying" and just doing, you will get more accomplished!  Also, instead of calling them "spinning my wheels activities" I would refer to them as my "time vampires." That says it all!  Thank you for your comment. If we can do anything to assist you, please don't hesitate to call!
