I must say I have never seen a tree like it.  Are they only native to your area of the country?

Gerry - It looks like the aliens flocked it!  You ought to send it over to Robert Swetz - He'd love it!

Hi Gerry, it looks like a tree that's been cut down.... the round thing is the trunk showing sideways, right?

Hi Gerry ~ What kind of tree is that?  It looks a little like a very dusty Christmas tree (I should know - mine is still ditched in the side yard!).  Very cool looking.

Gerry, What the heck is it?  There is a type of moss that you can use to start your campfire..and then there is Mistletoe which is not good-  but I can't tell what's up with this furry tree!

I had all kinds of theories, but then my brain said, "That's not possible!" before the thought was complete! I am stumped...and headed out of town, so I guess I'll have to wait...hmmm...

Cool shot, Gerry! Is it moss growing on the tree? You have moss in Montana?

You know Gerry, most people would have passed on this shot, but a creative mind like yours knew this would make a very cool photo!

Thanks for all your comments!

The photo was taken on the Meeteetse Trail (see the following post for more photos taken on the same day: Hiking on the Meeteetse Trail ).

Susan, Mary and Debi where on the right trail. It is a cut tree (the circle you see is the trunk) with the branches all covered with moss.  The moss was covering a small area of the forest along the hiking trail.  It was fascinating to watch and when I saw this tree on its side and covered with moss, I knew it would make for an interesting photo from the angle at which I asked my friend Marisa to take this photo.  I enjoyed reading some of the comments that I received above.  :)

I don't know what type of tree (it is not only native to this area).  Just dead branches covered with moss which made it very appealing and made it look like the tree was still alive.
