Amur Leopard

The Amur Leopard  is one of the rarest felids in the world with an estimated 35 to 45 individuals remaining in the wild. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature has deemed the Amur leopard critically endangered, meaning that it is considered to be facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.

Debi,

The Amur leopard is beautiful.  His eyes are so sharp, I don't want him staring me down. (smile)

Hey Deb,

Does your buddy here have a mate at the zoo? I read that there are so few of them that inbreeding is a problem.

Your collection of fantastic shots just keeps growing. I hope it's paying off for you.

Hey Debi....What an exquisite animal.  His eyes look so different, more on the gray side than the typical yellows and greens.  I sense a keen intelligence behind those very humanoid eyes.  I don't think I've ever noticed round pupils in a cat before.  I love the white whiskers on the black background.  My impulse would be to hug, kiss and play with him.  Just a big kitty I tell myself :-)  AWESOME!!!

Deb....I just read that the large cats do indeed have round pupils, with the usual exceptions of course.  We don't often get to gaze into the eyes of the Big Cats....I think that makes this photo even more special ~ thanks so much for capturing and sharing this pic, you ARE the best :-)

Hi Connie Lou,  Me either! Thanks for stopping by!

Michael - Yes, it is too bad. They are gorgeous animals. I appreciate your comments!

Rich - No, this is the only one at our zoo. I hadn't read that, but it makes sense. Paying off? You mean in money? LOL No, but it is what keeps me happy and productive! ;)

Sharon, Yes, this was taken at our zoo. I have looked for shots of this cat many times, but it was always hiding. I finally got lucky! And yes, I use a 300mm zoom. In this case, it wasn't that far away anyway.

Hi Caron,  Yes! LOL It's a big boy alright!Look at the size of those paws!

Hey MS Gail! She is so amazing isn't she? I just learned about the round pupils too - There is a cat I shot the other day called a Palla's Cat that is about the size of a large house cat, that also has round pupils. Very cool looking. I'm waiting for a better shot of that one, also elusive. When I get one that pleases me I'll share it. Thanks for your visit - I'll be around to see you in a little bit!

Debou, This cat is beautiful, it saddens me that they might become extint! What then? 'They' can clone a sheep, which we have a million of, but cannot clone the creatures like this? Gorgeous photos and those paws are huge.

Here's Gail ( she's so cute isn't she?) "here kitty kitty, come give Ladybird a hug!" LOL!!

You know Mary, you bring up a good point. That would be one way to avoid extinction of these animals. I wonder if anyone is pursuing that possibility?Who needs cloned sheep, anyway? To my knowledge, we have plenty of sheep!

Yeah, our Gail. Can you just picture it? All snuggled up with the kitty? LOL

Have a good night my friend!

Hi Debi-I agree with the rest of your commenters that this cat is a gorgeous creature. I just love those eyes. VERY penetrating and very beautiful. Definitely an amazing capture. I like Mary's idea as well. I had to LOL at Gail though about cuddling up and playing with this kitty, This kitty gives a whole new meaning to feral kitty, You would have to have your camera ready to capture those shots<SMILE> Have a great Sunday.
