I recently posted a blog “Rental Fraud on Craig’s List”. I received numerous emails thanking me for bringing it to their attention. One of them sent me a copy of a similar Craig’s List posting. Here is a copy of her email which included the ad:

This is a message i received from a craigslist ad. This is a scam? The rent is low but I would not have rented the house without looking at it first. The PostingID: 1181039122. I was interested in the house but it did seem kind of odd they would not rent the house before they went to Africa. I'm glad I saw your website. Thanks!

We need to be aware of these scams. If you see a posting like this where it seems too good to be true, it probably is. If you are doing business on Craig’s List, read their guidelines on “Avoiding Scams and Frauds”. If you suspect fraud, here are the numbers to report it (also posted on Craig’s List):

One of the simple things that I did was to Google search the phone number that was in the ad. In that instance and the one above, it was associated with the Nigerian puppy scam.

As long as this is profitable to the scammers, it will continue. The only way that it can be slowed down (it will never stop) is for everyone to be aware and to take action. If you see it, report it. One of the people that called my seller reported the fraud to Craig’s List, because when I went to look for the posting, it was already taken down.

Remember the old adage “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.” Be aware. Protect yourselves. Protect others by reporting it. We won’t eliminate the scams and fraud, but we will cut into their profits, making it less desirable to them to continue.

Thanks for reading my blog
