What If There’s a Baby in the House?

By
Home Stager with Gloria Home Staging, Inc.

Decluttering is one of the major jobs home sellers face, but what happens if there is a baby in the family? What member of a family has more furniture, equipment, and just plain stuff than a baby? And it seems that it is all needed! It may be hard for parents to decide what to pack during the selling process, but if they remember that packing as much as possible is very likely to shorten that process, they may find that they can do without some things they didn't think they could.

For example, this family decided that they could do without their 6-month-old's changing table and the glider and ottoman. What resulted was a lovely, clutter-free room that served their basic needs and showed off the room at the same time. It made the room easier to keep clean for showings, too!

Nice work Laurie, but how did they do without the rocker???  Did you change the paint color or is it just the lighting?  It appears very peachy in the first photo and more yellow in the AFTER.

Hi, Ginger - I was almost as surprised that they could do without the rocker as I was that they volunteered to store the changing table. I would have had a hard time giving up either thing! The paint color is the same, it's just the difference in the lighting, and that I used a flash in the before, but not in the after picture. Thanks for commenting!

Laurie -- the "After" photo looks so much more appropriate for selling!  If sellers are really motivated I've found they can often do without a lot of things they use.  A small inconvenience for a short time may mean a faster sale!

Babies are clutter magnets.  It's a challenge, too, to deal with high chairs.

Great job!

Janelle - Thanks!

Cathy - They really did do a lot of work. We were very pleased at how much stuff they were willing to part with. Thanks for stopping by!

Maureen - Inconvenience is one of the things sellers invest in to sell their homes. By being will to not "have it all" for a while, they get the ultimate object - a sold home - faster. Thanks for your comment!

Wendy - Thanks! They surely are "clutter magnets!" This particular baby had two swings, as well as all the other stuff. She didn't hava a high chair yet, so we didn't have to deal with that, fortunately.

Preparing your property for sale

HI Laurie, I always take the time to explain that most babies only need the bare minimum to get through a day. If the home owner is motivated to get a quick sale and get back to normal living as quickly as possible, then they will do their best to store the excess baby items while the house is listed.  Mothers who live outside of North America live in much smaller quarters and simply don't have the space to let baby items take over a household. They all manage to grow up into happy adults so I suggest we give it try.

I've had sellers that just weren't as motivated and insisted they needed all that stuff...too bad because a little inconvenience for a short time could mean selling faster and getting back to a normal life sooner.

Laurie,

The after photo looks so much more spacious!!!  Which means more visible square footage and that is always a plus when selling.  The baby room now looks so beautiful, great job!!!

Hi Laurie, the changes you made may have been small but what a huge impact it had on the overall look and feel of room. Very nicely done!

Huge impact Laurie! Thanks for blogging about this because babies and children are often home-sellers excuses to not follow our sound advice. This proves it can be done and with great success - great job.

Michelle - I agree with you! "Less is more" is a good motto for life in general, and not only for staging. Thanks for your excellent addition to the conversation!

Sharon - You're right. It is hard for some people to take the long view when there is inconvenience involved. Truthfully, I would have had a hard time putting the changing table in storage... Thanks for commenting!

Linda - The room felt pretty cramped before, but they really cleared it out. I'm glad you like it!

Cynthia - Thanks! Basic de-cluttering (or, as we call it, pre-packing) does make a world of difference.

Debra - I bet babies really don't care where we change their diapers, so NO EXCUSES! Just get the home sold and put that changing table up in the new home. Thanks for your encouragement!

I love doing kids rooms.  One time I had to take the after photo when the baby was asleep in the baby bed.  I always jokingly said "Baby not included".

Thanks, Cindy! I really enjoyed doing this room. That's funny about your picture with the baby in it. I guess babies aren't fixtures, so they wouldn't convey with the home...
