Does your spouse SUPPORT YOUR real estate CAREER?

By
Real Estate Agent with Great Homes Realty

We Realtors can live hectic lives, work 24/7, put work in front of family, appointments before dates, business calls before grocery shopping, writing contracts before writing birthday cards to our loved ones. Ouch!

We do have to live a balanced life, and some realtors are leading the way in building teams, getting in schedules that include time for family, personal enhancement, exercise, weekends off, and god willing even vacations. I do strive to follow in your footsteps, but not there yet...

So what is on my side? A very special person that shares my dreams, that supports my every move, that helps me sort out situations, that guides me to the right path, and somebody that expects me to make time for him according to an agreed upon schedule but allows me to still put lots of hours into my real estate business. Somebody that also believes that this career is one of the best to invest time and energy into.

Is somebody giving you a hard time day in day out? Or:

DO YOU HAVE SOMEBODY SPECIAL THAT IS THERE FOR YOU?

Yes, my husband is my biggest cheerleader. I'm not sure what'd I do without him. He is intelligent and he is my better half to help walk through my decisions.

Niki...it is a very difficult balance that we go through.  Many a professional, any profession, doesn't always get the support that they need.  Although...this does go both ways!

Niki,  I'm been working on that very thing!  I'm too busy with work.  It can consume you...  My wife is supportive.  And even my Mother-in-Law has joined my team.  I have great people around me that help me keep my family, my children, and my wife my priority.  I list them separately because we spend time all together, with just me and the kids, and an occasional date - Date night is this Friday with my wife - thanks again supportive family... I know how lucky and blessed I am.  But, you have to work on choosing the right priority and make things balanced... It won't happen on its own!!!  Thanks for reminding me of all of the special people in my life!!!!

Thank you all for your comments.

I started taking Sundays off recently. This after many years of not having an official day off and only getting a break when every once in a blue moon I got sick.

I am enjoying my new-found personal and family day and we do fun things, like playing ping-pong, riding our bikes, kayaking, going on little trips, etc. I guess it is a step in the right direction.

This is a very important set of points. A supportive spouse can make a career just like a problematic one can break one . . .

Yes my husband is there for me tremendously. And vice versa as he is taking classes and working full time this year. Crazy busy, but there is a scheduled end to it. We like to go out and listen to live music to relax and unwind.

As long as my husband can see the numbers auto-load into Quicken, he doesn't complain... too much!  He gets annoyed with the phone ringing so late sometimes, and I've been answering the phone less in the evenings, but overall, if I'm just watching tv or doing nothing, I answer the phone or return emails.

No, I get zero support.  That would only change for a corporate job, and that ain't gonna happen.

We all have obstacles that get in our path that we have to overcome and find a compromise to make life fulfilling.

Niki, I am not in the real estate business, nor is my husband, but we both can appreciate the point you are making.  It's actually such an important point that no matter what business we are in, we should all make the effort to support each other in our respective careers.   Equally as important is to make time away from work to spend time with our families.  I am so happy to hear you are doing that.  I can attest that you made yourself available for us at all hours and days during the purchase of our home.

Very good point, Niki.  After my 8-year-old daughter repeatedly made comments like "You're never home" - "You're always working" - "You never have time for me" - I had to step back and decide that that wasn't how I wanted  her to remember me or her childhood.  I take more time for both my girls now, but it is definitely a delicate balance.

Niki,

I like this post. My wife is a lender so you might say it goes both ways. This is a busy household, we don't have kids, so it is our life. I play golf but she does nothing FUN. We haven't had a vacation in a year and half. Just concentrating on making money. But we have each other so YES there is support. You might know her, Donne Knudsen, she is a major active rainer.

Tell Her I love her. Better yet, I Love you HONEY.....

I am so glad a lot of you ARE receiving great support from your spouses.

And those of you who don't ... I am sorry to hear. Two forces pulling in the opposite direction can be a really strenuous exercise. Kind of like pulling rope.

The effort one is making toward reaching one's personal goals, which is part of our survival, is being hindered by a strong counter-effort pulling away from those goals. So now you have to exert yourself twice as much to move forward.

And add to that the turbulent forces of the current real estate market and you find yourself in the middle of a tsunami.

Let's all keep working on our balanced lives. Time for ourselves, time for family, time for work, and don't forget time for our higher calling helping others and the planet :-)
