REALTORS and Door Knocking--we have fun don't we? Comments continue to trickle in. Occasionally, I get a phone call from somewhere in the vast US regarding this topic.
So far I haven't got down to science yet with door knocking but continue to delight in the unpredictability. The best recommendation I have is always have something of value other than a business card ready to hand out. Sometimes when I intend to door knock I don't even make out of my car.
I am an advocate of being visible, especially when you are in the "neighborhood". Wearing magnetics on your vehicle has been a controversial issue of discussion from time to time. Some REALTORS would never adorn their vehicle, however, I think it is important for our safety for people to know who we are.
Take yesterday for instance, I decided to drop by the neighborhood and take a look at a home I have under contract. A couple of neighbors were together chatting in their yards, so I asked if they noticed if anyone had been working at the house lately.
They told me that yes, they had seen workers and even went over to chat with them. Then the woman told me that she had heard from the buyer that he got a really good deal, but he couldn't tell her how much he paid because it was a secret.
Then both of them said they had been thinking about selling (a new super Walmart is moving in very close--one neighbor wanted to avoid the extra traffic; another neighbor saw it as a boost in property value as did my client). Each of them asked for a card. I handed them one each, then each of them asked for more to give to their friends.
I mentioned that the buyer and I went to the same church and invited them to join us if they cared to and that we had a picnic planned for this Saturday. I also took the opportunity to plug curb appeal for their homes as it improves everyone's property value...(if you plan to list your property you might want to work on that faded and chipped paint and trim those bushes).
Maybe tomorrow I'll actually get out of my car.
