Politics and Real Estate - What a combination!!!

By
Real Estate Agent with Sotheby's International Realty

I will come out and say it I am a registered Democrat and that is about the gist of it.  I serve as the chair of our local real estate government affairs committee, the vice-chair (incoming chair) of our state associations legislative committee, and finance chair of our county democratic committee.  I am also an RPAC trustee.  All of this is great since in the real estate committees we do our best to stay non-partisan and address issues which effect property rights.

But boy can it be scary when you get in a car with potential clients and they begin asking those soft political questions.  I just smile and tell the real estate committees I sit on but I am very careful not to let anymore slip.  In the car with clients is not the place to spew our political beliefs, it is the place to talk up our cities and all the amenties they will offer the future homebuyer.  I can tell you I have had a bloodied tongue on occasion just having to bite down on it.  But at the end of the day when you have given it your all - you know it was the right thing to do and keep politics out of the home selling process.

I am also democrat, and more than with clients, I have had to bite my tongue in my office!  Lots of republicans there!

Victoria was that a deliberate pun-- "jest" instead of "gist"? BTW, it works in reverse for Republicans with Democratic buyers

Victoria...

I've been in this business long enough to know that RE doesn't mix well with either politics or religion. I'm constantly amazed when I see good salespeople mixing their beliefs with their business. I try very hard not to do that.

TLR - it is amazing to me.  I have seen agents give or invite their clients to political events not knowing what their political beliefs are.

I'm on the other side of the isle.  (The right side :) )  If my clients hang around me enough they know how I feel about things.  I do not shove anything down their throat.  I try to find points of agreement.

Politics and religion are subjects it's best to avoid in my book.  I made that mistake once and the driver got so agitated he almost wrecked the car.

Richard - I am going to presume you weren't the driver!  But I agree keep politics and religion with those you know well.

Well said Victoria.  I will not discuss politics with anyone.  Many time people are so set in their ways or passionate about it, it just makes for an uncomfortable situation.

Hi Victoria ~ I think I can count the Republican clients I've had on the fingers of one hand - with some fingers left over. I love where I live.  Even so it was fairly late in the game before I put my Obama bumper sticker on my car.
