Hello everyone!
I wanted to let you know how great 4th of July is in our little town! It is the longest running 4th of July celebration in the state. The festivities start with Smyrna HarringtonERA putting miniature American flags up and down every main street in Smyrna. At 10:00 a.m., we have the most awesome parade. Smyrna and Clayton take turns hosting the parade since the 2 towns together are smaller than most small towns. We have police cars, fire trucks, pageant winners, girl and boy scouts and our local sports teams strutting their stuff.
The parade ends at the Municipal Park on North Main Street. Boy is the park set up for fun! There are a ton of vendors giving stuff away. Plenty of equipment for the kids to play on, so the adults can reconnect with their neighbors. We have most beautiful baby contests, dog contests, and of course, the famous lawnmower races! You see everyone you know at some point during the day at the park. It's like a town fair that we have once a year!
As the sun starts fading, the real excitement begins!! Everyone parks their cars at North Smyrna Elementary School. The firefighters of Citizens Hose Company have a tradition of gathering in the circle in front of the school. As it gets dark, the kids are impatient for the fireworks to start. Finally you see that one light in the sky. It turns into a beautiful 45 minute long display of lights and colors! Everyone locally should attend the Smyrna/Clayton 4th of July celebration atleast once. If not, you are missing out!
Here is a link to the Smyrna/Clayton July 4th Association. Feel free to check it out and join us this July!!!
