Few Days Are "Normal"

By
Education & Training with Steve Hoffacker LLC

Very few days are actually normal - how could they be? Just think, for something to be "normal" it has to be an average of events over time - including the extremes.

Take temperature. If the normal high is 72 and the normal low is 59, we might actually experience that a few times. How often though do we hear that we are experiencing above average or below average temperatures - a heat wave or a cold front?

If it normally rains or snows a certain amount at a time or per year, does that mean it does this everytime? Of course not. It's an average.

If we normally have a cup of coffee on the way to office each morning, some days we will go without and some days we'll have something to eat along with it.

If customers normally look at so many homes with us before they buy or return to look at the one they ultimately buy so many times before they purchase it, there will be those who buy the first thing they look at, the first time out. There will be others that take weeks. So what's normal? It's an average.

If we normally have to stop at 3 red lights out of the several traffic lights that we pass on the way to office, sometimes we'll get lucky and have none or one. Sometimes, we'll get them all, or all but one.

So, we typically don't live a normal existence or experience any truly normal days - just in case you were wondering.

Is this the normal blog?  That word has bugged me forever.   If one gets into the mindset of treating situations as the normally do, they may not get the desired result that they normally get, and they wonder, why they had such a problem, as this normally does not happen. If one does not expect whatever normal is and when normal does not happen, is that then normal?  Just a thought.....

Tim,

Great response and way to work with those words. Is more than I would normally expect from you? :)

Steve - Normal is similar to average, and there really isn't such a thing as things being average because it is a culmination of data that creates the average.  Like you said, if the average temperature on a specific day over the past 2 years is 80 degrees - that could mean that one year the temperature was 65, and the next year the temperature was 95.  That's really a huge difference, but the average looks real good.

Steve,

Those days that start out normal can quickly turn to abnormal.

Troy,

You're right - average, normal, and usual are all about the same. :)

Steve,

That's true too - and then that helps determine the new normal. :)

Hi Steve

It' nice to have a normal day; but I feel that we live out of the norm most of the time.

Good luck and success.

Lou,

Those days are just approximating the normal that will the average of all the non-normal days. :)

Normally, I don't speed or roll a stop sign.  Normally, if I do, I get a ticket.  Normally, I would complain a bit.  But this wasn't any normal day.  It was catch and release Sunday.  With a stern warning and a promise by me to be good, I went on to have a normal, boring Sunday.

Hi Steve - Great points made.  But then life is so much more interesting when it varies from time-to-time.  I'm not sure what normal is either; I just plan each day and then make adjustments along the way.  It seems that very little goes as expected but then this just permits us to sharpen our skills in dealing with things as they come up.

Jon,

I like the variety as well - that's one of the reasons I have my own business. :)
