Balance in everything!

By
Real Estate Agent with Raleigh Cary Realty

Balance is so hard to keep isn't it.  Here for the past few months, I just couldn't seem to balance everything no matter how hard I tried.

I truly believe too much of anything is a bad thing that one has to keep focused on spending time concentrating on all of the things that matter in life and that includes family, work, physical and mental well being in your life (spiritual side).

My family and real estate have definitely taken over my life the last few years and I knew in the long run they were all that mattered because I had to be successful in real estate to take care of my family and there is nothing I enjoy more than spending time with them.  However, I have finally taken the time to work on my physical health which has been so neglected for the past few years.

I would love to blame my family and real estate but truth is I just enjoy those a lot more and they were easier, especially when you are out of shape like I have been.  I will not even get into all of that junk food people were forcing me to eat:)

I kept reading about all my friend on Face Book who were actually doing physical activities and had kids and demanding jobs so what was my excuse?  It just kept getting me down until I finally decided to do something about it.

A friend suggested joining Team in Training to raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  I thought they were crazy to suggest a marathon but the idea started to grow on me.  It would not be just for me and it would motivate me at the same time.  The City of Oaks Marathon here in Raleigh, NC is coming up this November 1st and I found that drive that I have needed and have been training for the past 4 weeks.  I had to make it bigger than me, a job for a good cause, that I would announce to the world (Mainly so I couldn't get out of it)!

Here is the thing!

So far this has been the best thing for my family and real estate because not only am I getting in shape I am feeling good about myself again and the walks and jogs have been so good for my mental well being that things just aren't bothering me the same.  I am pretty laid back anyway but this is awesome!

I am doing good for me and it is good for my family and work.  How cool is that!  I also am actually watching what I eat because it is very important if I am going to move my body 26.2 miles and the good thing is I want to do it.  I am not use to actually being motivated to watch what I eat, it use to not matter and then it didn't matter.  Times have changed though I have to change my lifestyle now because it wont get easier as I turn 40 here soon.

Some times we have to take time for ourselves if we want to be the best for other things!

Whatever is missing in your life to create balance work on it!  I promise you, not only will you be thankful but those around you will too!

George- You've set quite a goal. Good luck, I know you can do it. See, eating that salad at lunch with me instead of the burger was inspiring wasn't it?

And congrats on getting on the daily AR news letter!

WOW! I had no idea you were in training for a marathon. That's great stuff George. Any interest in some mountain biking with me? There are so many great trails here and it's another great way to stay in shape.

Congratulations on the featured post!

Good for you. Physical well being is so important to our psyche. You have stopped complaining about the lack of physical excercise and taken control of your body, mind and image with a most meaningful goal.

Good luck in the marathon.

I'm in training for Football season.  As we speak I am spending marathon amounts of time in front of the TV getting ready for 3 games on Sunday and the Monday night bonus game.  I am finding new recipes and working on cooking brauts and other football favorites.  I am feeling the Burn.

In all seriousness, good for you.  I used to do a little running and a lot of hiking/backpacking.  I am getting older and it is getting harder, but I still try to do some walking and hiking.

Wow, good luck to you and glad your feeling upbeat now with all the activity.  I got a dog so that we could go on walks and loose weight and stay fit.  I love it, she needs a break in the shade, I just keep going!

Linda -  your eating definitely inspired me:)  Thanks for the donation!

Craig - I will pull out the bike and clean it off.  Any and all aerobic exercise is needed and welcomed.

Thanks Diane, Ginger & Ed!

Gene - I am just as psyched about football as you are I will just have to do it before.  You need to post your recipes!  I am definitely going to watch my body & joints to make sure they can handle it and if not I will walk the half marathon.  So far so good!

Lyn - Dogs are wonderful companions and they make us get out and walk thank goodness.  That was one of the things I have been doing before but I have an english mastiff who just doesn't want to go far in the summer heat.  She prefers laying on my cool tile floor in the summer:)

Hi George,  I'm really happy for you and your new appreciation for physical well being.  You might want to read the books by " DR OZ " .  He is the guy Oprah sets aside an entire hour for when on her show.

Good luck on your marathon.  Team in Training is great.  Only the ultra fit, major runners can run a whole marathon straight through.  Walking is perfectly honorable, the goal is to finish.

Our training begins every morning at 6:30 AM, my wife and I do half and hour of pilates with weights, then at 7:00 AM we beging dancing... until 8:30 AM every day of the week! Once a week we meet with our dance coach to review our progress. We have been doing this for the last 7 years! we have learned to love it and the day will not go right if we do not dance! I had an addition done to the house so we could have a 900 square feet ballroom to dance in everyday. Nothing will go wrong if the first thing you do every morning is the TANGO! I know it takes dedication and a willingess to do whatever it takes to stay on the routine, by reading your post, it appears to me that you have found that and I congratulate you on your cause and wish you all the best... after all, the best is yet to come! Congrats on the feature.

Antonio

It is difficult to live that balanced life. Too busy working to live. Too busy living to work. It took some time. I finally got a handle on it all.  I found myself in the past--tired and spent--working 12-13 hours days. Working six plus days a week. But, I looked at my day. Most were spent on tasks that didnt make me money. Just wasted my day. Checking E-mails like crazy. Took a step back(getting sick helped)--now focus on what needs to get done. Focus on builing the business--not the make work stuff. Guess what I found. Time. Plenty of it too. Now I have time for friends and family. I have the time to work. But now I have time to play. It depends on how and where you focus your energy. I will no longer turn away someone who whats to watch a show with me. Or justs want to chat. I will keep up with business.  But I choose how and where I devote my time. The business no longer runs me. I run the business.

Bill - Thanks for tip on the book.  I will check it out!

Barbara- Definitely taking it one step at a time (No pun intended :), I am training like I am doing the whole thing but will be watching my body the whole time.

Antonio - That is the best of both worlds quality time with your wife and keeping healthy.  Amy (my wife) and I have been trying to walk together and go to the gym when possible.

Mike I know what you mean.

Al - That is definitely the right attitude. It is amazing what it takes for us to realize that sometimes!

You only get one body George. As our elders will tell us...everything goes downhill if you don't watch it. It is better to take some time every day. You will have more energy and you will live longer. Good luck on this race.

George -

Seeing you talk about balance I cant help but think of Gary Keller talk about how there is no such thing as a truly balanced life - it is instead the artful process of counterbalancing & I appluad you fro your efforts!
