Why the Desert "ROCKS"

Why would anyone want to live in the desert?!?  This is the question that I get from a lot of my friends who live down south in the Los Angeles area.  The truth is, I can't really blame them for asking!  In this day and age, the only desert most people see is Iraq!  Unfortunately, that limited experience of the desert has caused them to miss out on all the great aspects of living in a place like the Antelope Valley.

On a recent mountain bike journey along the mountains north of Rosamond, I was struck by just how beautiful the desert really is!  Not many people in southern California even know what it is like to breath air that you can't see.  The breeze that usually blows through the valley in the evening does a fantastic job of pushing all of our smog down to our neighbors to the south...usually Los Angeles.

As I pedaled my way up the steep mountains I thought, why not take some pictures?  At left, you can see my faithful steed reflected in the lens of my sunglasses.  Don't act like you're not impressed!  I'll be honest with you, that shot was pure genius...

In the picture on the right you can see a view of the entire Antelope Valley from the northern tip of Rosamond across the 30 miles to the southern mountains behind Palmdale.  Needless to say, you can see a lot farther when the air is clear!

So what advice would I give to someone who was considering a move to the area?  Bring your sunblock and your dirty lungs out here!  Your pasty complexion will thank you.

Jon, great post. I just drove from the SCV to the Mammoth area. There is a lot of beautiful desert out there! In fact, I mentioned to my wife, as we were driving through Mojave, I can see the appeal to living out here.
