Blogging - The Places You'll Go

By

I've discovered that one of the unexpected benefits of blogging is that it gets me out and about - out of my car and out of my house.  Truth be told, I tend to be a bit of a workaholic and at the end of a long day I'm usually happiest at home - working on my blog of course!

But blogging means you've got to get involved - visit that neighborhood to take photos, check out that local attraction you want to write about, or eat at that new restaurant so you can write a review.

I've been getting coaching about blogging from the Real Estate Tomato's Ricardo Bueno.  Ricardo's an expert on social networking. In one of our first sessions Ricardo urged us to get out to Meetups, Tweetups, etc.

Inwardly (and probably outwardly too - I'm not shy!) I groaned - puhleeease - I can barely keep it together between real estate, blogging about real estate, and keeping myself dressed and fed.  Who has time - or energy - to go out and mingle?  Not me I thought.

Well I'm happy to report that I went to my first Meetup last night - and I loved it.  I stumbled upon it while searching online one night.  It's a Meetup group about WordPress blogs and the event was held at Microsoft in Cambridge. Wow - what a location - wrap-around views of the Charles River and a fridge fully stocked with free soda - complimentary Diet Coke - that's my idea of a great place to work!

The night featured a talk about Wordpress SEO and marketing by Kevin Leary, a web designer and developer.  It was an excellent presentation - some stuff that was over my head, some stuff I already knew, and plenty that I didn't. I've still got to go over my notes.

One thing that tickles my funny bone that I've encountered at the last three tech oriented meetings I've been to - presenters who look like they could be in high school.  Excellent presenters all believe me - and they're not actually high school age - at least I don't think so - but they're often the youngest person in the room - and it's their show.  How cool is that? And all I can think is - yowza! what must high school be like nowadays when there are all these amazing opportunities for techie kids?

Anyways - I'm really glad I went.  And it crossed my mind more than once that blogging brought me there - just like it's brought me to a lot of places recently that I would never have taken the time to check out otherwise. I've joined a couple of other groups and will be off to another meeting in a couple of weeks.

Check out Meetup groups near you - you never know what you'll find, where you'll go or who you'll meet.

Liz - this is really a good commentary on the need to get out from behind our computers, whether for clients or for our blogs. And the networking may be one of the best benefits. Getting other people's perspectives can be so helfpul, as well as sharing our own, plus you always come away with some new ideas. Ricardo is a great gy adn now a good friend - it has been a pleasure to get to know him, and to be on a couple of panels at recent events.

Those are excellent point, Elizabeth.  Blogging is a great way to view your community with fresh eyes and new ideas.  We end up expanding our life experiences in the process.

Hi Jeff! It really has been a great benefit of blogging - I would *think* about attending some event, or visiting some attraction but inertia sets in, appointments get in the way, etc.  Now i'm far more likely to get there.   And working with Ricardo has been great.

Hi Ross - and write about too!

Hi Norma ~ That's the truth for sure.  It's really been a wonderful side effect.

Liz:  It sounds like you had a great time at this meet-up.  Lots to learn.  So... the presenters all looked like they were in high school.  So what you're trying to say is that they all looked like they were perhaps ten years younger than you... fifteen at the most.  That's not bad.  Not bad at all.

Liz - I enjoy meetups - I have gone to a view and always meet interesting people.  Some I knew online, others I didn't.  In my book, you have to leave the virtual world and engage in real-life networking.  That means - you have to get out there and I don't mean virtually.  Nice post - great advice.

Good one Karen!!  That's my best chuckle of the day.

Hi Ryan ~ I had a great time and joined a few more groups after I got home. I tend to be really good at entertaining myself so the nudge to get out is good.

Wow.

I would have thought it to be the opposite.

That blogging causes you to stay in more in front of the computer.

I guess it's the amount of social intent you have with blogging that makes the difference.

Wow! I'm jealous. Microsoft in Cambridge? Lovely location and lots of NERDS. I've checked through meetups before, but not about blogging. Thanks for the lovely idea.

Hi Vickie ~ I knew that Microsoft had space in Cambridge but hadn't paid attention to where - it was great fun to see the place.  And there's definitely a heavy concentration of nerds in this area - the majority of the technology meetup groups were waaaay over my head.  Glad I found some that were my speed!

HELLO LIZ!  Isn't it fun to do something that you have "kinda, sorta, maybe not really wanted to do" and then end up having it be this great?!  Glad you went -- I like to stay at home at night too! -- Gab

Liz, what I like about a WordPress meetup is that you'll probably meet a bunch of people who are not Realtors® and could actually be prospects somewhere down the line.  Of course, the AR meetups are a blast any time.

Hi Gabrielle ~ That's so often the case for me - I'll have to remember that the next time I want to blow something off.

Hi Pat ~ Exactly! I tend to socialize with fellow agents so it's very nice to get out in a different groove.

Hi Andrea ~ Too funny! It's true though.
