Camera recommendation for real estate professionals. Camera, State College, PA

I recently purchased the Canon PowerShot SX10 IS (20x zoom 10.0 megapixels) at our local Best Buy in Nyssa Smith with Canon PowerShot SX10 IS Copyright Nyssa SmithState College, PA.  I love it! Wide angle lens (well, relatively wide-angel for a point and shoot camera). I think for a point and shoot camera it's the best (although, it was one of the priciest point and shoot - about $350-$400 range). But I wanted the best camera I could get in a point and shoot. Because the last one I had (while being really cool and small), it didn't take the best shots for real estate. And now I can get more of the room in with this camera. For a real estate agent needing to capture as much as possible, I think this camera does it. I think it's the next best thing to a professional's. Not quite as good. But the next best thing for the price.

The cons. It does take batteries. It's not rechargeable. But I am getting used to that. It's kind of nice when I am out to not have to worry about recharging it. I just have to make sure I have an extra supply of batteries. I just keep an extra set in the camera bag at all times. It's not that big of a deal. Also, I see the need to purchase the additional larger flash. I have not done that yet. But yes, this will be needed at times for the real estate shots. Not in all areas and not all the time. But now that I have used the camera somewhat over the last couple of months, I can see that this will be good for me to have in certain lighting (or lack there of). It does come with a flash on it. But sometimes, that flash is not sufficient (only in certain scenarios).

And finally, on a personal level, my son plays baseball.  So here's my opinion on other uses with this camera besides real estate.  My son is a pitcher and I can sit in the stands or at the fence and with the 20x zoom, it takes awesome photos!  I can get really close up to my son on the field.  I have fantastic shots that look like a real professional took them.

All in all, IMHO, it's a great camera for the price.

Your friend in the real estate biz,

~Nyssa

I love my Cannon Rebel. Its really easy to get great shots with 11 Mega pixel. The lens options are great too. Cannon is the best!

Hi Nyssa,  A couple of months ago I decided that the point & shoot just wasn't cutting it for real estate work.  All of them do excellent work outdoors but fall way short for interior work on our listings.  I really wish I had not purchased a point & shoot even though it did as well as most agents care to do.  I upgraded to a  Nikon D80 and added a Sigma 10-20mm lens and a Nikon strobe light.  Using the wide angle and strobe allows me to better serve my customers.  Now I do shots for new listings for other agents in our office.  For anyone considering an upgrade please actually compare the final output from a less expensive camera with that of a camera equipped with the tools needed for our type of work !

Thank you for your comments! I'm so glad this came in at the perfect time for you!

Bill~ I was thinking of spending more because I wanted really great shots!  But then when I started adding it all up, I was up to $900-$1,000!  And as much as I actually love photography, this was just too much to spend since I'm not a professional photographer.  So, for the $350 I spent on this camera, I am very pleased with it.  It's so much better than the small slimline pocket point and shoot camera I was using before that didn't cut it.  This one does cut it!  And you can add the additional larger flash (which I do think it needs for certain rooms).  That's so cool you do shots for other agents.  I'd be curious what they pay you for that.  Maybe you can actually get paid back for the extra money you spent!  :-)

Hi Nyssa ( again ! )  Actually, I upgraded the system as part of investing in myself.  When I do work for others it helps me get better at this whole photography thing and I do not charge anything.  You are right about the cost but think of all the things we invest in to make us more productive or provide a higher level of service to our customers.

Hi Charles~ This one is the 20x zoom and 10 megapixels.  That might be the difference.  Not that I needed the 10 megapixels.  But I love the 20x zoom!  Especially for my son's baseball games!  My main reason for the purchase was the wide angle lens for real estate.  But when I was looking, I thought I might as well make sure I can take lots of good photos of my son, as well!  Thus the 20x zoom is perfect!

Hi Nyssa, I also just recently purchased the Canon PowerShot SX10 IS in Altoona, PA. Best Buy. I researched cameras for a few weeks and asked around... I agree (since we are not professional photographers) this is a GREAT camera for the price - I love it. I love the zoom and I really haven't had problems with not having adequate lighting with the flash. I use Microsoft Office Picture Manager to download the pics and lighten the pics with the software. I found a price for 299.00 and printed it out - took it to Best Buy and they matched the price. Love the price, love the camera, great (interior and exterior) pictures!!!
