Hello Microsoft? This is Google calling...
Want to talk operating systems? According to the Wall Street Journal, Wednesday, July 8th, Google Plans to Launch Operating System for PCs.

According to the article by Jessica E. Vascellaro, "Google Inc. is preparing to launch an operating system for personal computers, a direct assault on the turf of software giant Microsoft Corp., which has long dominated the market for software that runs on PC applications."

Wow is my first response. Competition for Windows will that bring improvements or complications? Probably both to begin with. Will my old software work or will I have to invest in new software?

That is the killer factor in the "buy or don't buy" scenario.  In fact when I purchased a new computer a year ago I went to Dell's Business Systems and requested Windows XP because I didn't want to buy new software for Vista. In the case of my Adobe Page Maker it would mean a different program all together because Adobe was pushing users toward InDesign and was not going to create a version of PageMaker for Vista. I had years of flyers and other files in PageMaker and I wasn't ready to invest the time to convert and learn a new system.

Netbooks will be the first target for Google's new system expected in the second quarter of 2010. Google spoke persons (bloggers) said a main goal is to address the security issues. That makes sense to me. Lousy security and it inhibits the internet capability of Google users.

google Windows

Those of us using full scale PCs will have to wait longer. Google will eventually get to us.

Another issue Google intends to address is the LONG delays in boot ups! YEAH! So far I like what I hear better security and quicker boot ups and more internet related (somehow that one doesn't surprise me coming from Google). Things they are a changing. I do feel this is a significant milestone for the direction of computers and the internet.

As one of the Googleites quoted in the article said, "We hear a lot from our users and their message is clear -- computers need to get better."

It does sound like the competition might be good for us as far as price goes, but darn, I just know it will mean more changes and I'm drowning in change right now.

Choice, interesting and change. I think that sums this up very well. And Marian I understand the "drowning" feeling in change, but I feels like it's coming faster not slowing down.

If they can figure out how to make everything work together kind of like OpenOffice did a few years ago, I would change operating systems in a heart beat. I love their internet browser and if their operating system is just as easy to use, I will be all over it.
