I do not watch much network television but occasionally stumble across a gem of a program that somehow infiltrates on to the network lineup – The West Wing, for example.
This year it may be Merlin on NBC on Sunday nights.
The premise of the program is that Merlin and Arthur of legend are contemporaries and meet in their youth before either has risen to the levels of greatness that the legends describe. This conflicts with the more familiar Merlin/Arthur stories where Merlin was an actor in medevial Britain before Arthur was born, but it makes for very entertaining television.
Such freedoms are not new – in 1985 Young Sherlock Holmes provided a glimpse into the youth of the great detective with a bit of backstory into the origins of Dr Watson and Professor Moriarty.
The characters are dashing, the scripts seem to be well written, the locations are wonderful, the actors performances are well done and the magic gives plenty of opportunity for special effects. It is a great combination for entertainment and I am trying not to call it Harry Potter in King Arthur’s Court (although Harry Potter virtues of duty, loyalty, good versus evil and friendship are present).
Attached is a brief introduction. Clip is a bit more than 8 minutes. Enjoy.
