Revamp Your Pillow Inventory for ZERO Dollars!!!

By
Home Stager with Platinum Home Staging, Inc. : RESA-Pro

Platinum Home Staging, Inc.We all have them. Piles of pillows that are either old, stained, faded or we bought for our inventory, "because they were such a great price" yet never to be used in an actual home.  You know what I'm talking about.  Don't deny it.

But here is an "A-HA!" moment I wanted to share.

For ZERO $$$, I practiced what I preach and used my good ol' fashion elbow greese (and a sewing machine) to revamp my pillow inventory rather than toss them, buy new slip covers or even to donate them only to then have to go BUY even more pillows.

Recently while at my local Upholstery Vendor, I asked if he had any scraps.  You know; the left over yardage of fabrics that are from the end of the bolt when doing large projects - his eyes lit up and he directed me to a HUGE shelving unit filled with scraps.

"You can have them!" he exclaimed - then it was ME who lit up and my brain started working wonders.

Platinum Home Staging, Inc.A few days later and after a few hours of sewing: I have an entirely new inventory of pillows.

A few tips to get the biggest bang for your buck:

1) Make the pillows reversible with different, but complimentary, fabrics on each side.

2) Plan out what sizes you have in your current pillow inventory and see which fabrics you can get the most out of.

There was even enough of some fabrics to make an entire Twin bed set! =D

Super idea for scoring free fabric! Sometimes it can cost more to make things yourself. I love the reuse and recycle component, too!

This is a great idea, and as others have mentioned, it's recycling at its best.  I must set a day aside to sew.  Thanks for the inspiration.

Great idea Connie!  Now its a matter of finding the time to do all of this sewing.  A great way to design your pillow inventory to coordinate with your artwork and accessories. Thanks for sharing!

Great idea Connie. Thanks. Garage sales are another place to find fabric for pennies. And lucky me - I just got my mom's sewing machine. Believe it or not, I was hand sewing...

Hi Connie,

Great way to restimulate your inventory as well as your imagination!  I find a simple piece of new fabric can inspire an entire room!  I have been known to buy thrift store pillows or clearance pillows and add buttons, shells, piping, jewels, and yes as tacky as it sounds stickers!  Please don't let the sound of jewels and stickers scare you.  You'd be surprised at how some of the new scrap-booking stickers can work!  I'd enclose photo's to show you what I mean, but I'm not that internet savvy yet.  I also use scarves, twine, & even heavy string to tie and decorate pillows with minimal sewing.  My least favorite is to dye an old pillow, but that sure helps out sometimes!

WOW - so sorry that I haven't come back to this post and replied to everyone.  But I am SO happy that it's been a contunued source of inspiration for some and a great place for everyone else to share how they have revamped their inventories as well!

Here is a picture of a recent "revamp" I did.  The striped fabric were actually remnants from custom drapery panels from a couple different clients - but when added up, there was enough fabric to make a coverlet and 2 king pillow shams. Enjoy!

I love this idea and asking for scraps is even better, now I just need to learn how to sew.

I love having pillows that are different on both sides.  Even when I'm buying, I try to look for those.  A great idea to make the covers and store them separately.  What a space saver!

Sewing is fun and easy to learn...once you get the threading of the machine and the bobbin filled, your set and ready to go. Machines can be found at garage sales and thrift stores.  You don't need a fancy machine to stitch up pillow covers!  I got my machine at costco years ago, use it all the time to hem up draperies or make adjustments to slip covers... the idea of remnants from the upholstery shop is brilliant!

I just finished making matching cushions and drapes, from the bargain bins at the local fabric store, for a project I'm working on. One of the clients friends came by and thought they were great! 3 or 4 seams and you're laughing, I didn't want to say how easy they were...

Great ideas everyone!

I like to look for pillows that have covers with zippers, that way I can re-use the inside pillow form in just the way Connie has described.

Hi Connie-all upholsterers stock their remnants and are willing to give them away or sell them to you for a song.  Using remnants is the best way to reupholster small chairs, benches and redo pillows.  And it's not even too difficult for me to sew a straight seam!
