BOHART BASH RACE REPORT
By Dave Peck
Location: Bohart Ranch Ski Area, Bozeman MT
The annual Bohart Bash is a thrilling off-road bicycle race combined with a festival atmosphere. Last Saturday July 11, the Bohart Bash (MORS race #4) had plenty going on to entertain the entire family! Live music, complimentary catered food and nail biting action. "This race is so cool" said one rider. "Racers line up on foot for a Lemans start and sprint 50 yards across a little meadow to their bikes scattered along the ground at the beginning of the course."
The course is a five mile undulating loop that takes racers through tight single track in dense pines, steep climbs and bone jarring descents in quick succession. The downhill sections are deceivingly sketchy.
"I come down for this one every year, this is probably the biggest cross country event in Montana," said Ed Warner, who traveled from Helena to compete. "If you can only do a couple (races), you've got to catch this one."
It's spectator friendly with racers looping through the start/finish area multiple times.
There are numerous races going on at the same time, because of different rider abilities and age groups," said , one of the Gallatin Alpine Sports/Intrinsik Architecture cycling team members helping to administer the race.
GAS/Intrinsik's Lisa Curry took home the victory in Women's Category 1 (Pro/Expert). "It was good," Lisa said. "This is one of the first races this year that there have been other women, so that made it a lot more fun. "The course is really hard, it's kind of on the gas the whole time, very short recovery periods, but really fun. I suffered miserably but it was fun."
Joshua Crutcher and his Gas Cycling Team put on a great display of volunteer organization.
Thanks to all that supported the race. In doing so, you are Montana Bicycle Racing.
